Most associate the problem with dog urine only but cat urine can be just as bad. It’s generally worse with female dogs because of the way they squat as opposed to the “sprinkling” technique of males.

Urine scorch is caused by two factors: nitrogen level and high pH. Nitrogen is naturally present in the urine of cats and dogs because they eat a lot of protein. When nitrogen-rich urine is applied to the lawn it dehydrates roots and turns the leaves yellow. In some cases this can kill the patch of grass. pH is also a factor. Dog urine should be around pH 6.5-7 but if it rises then the alkalinity of the urine will burn the leaves and roots.

Urine scorch is usually worse in the summer because of the sun, heat and general lack of rain. Pets can also become dehydrated making the urine even more concentrated and more dangerous to the lawn!

It’s not always simple to train a dog to urinate elsewhere (e.g. gravel path or bare soil) as many dogs just prefer to do their business on grass. So what can be done to help prevent the urine damaging the lawn you have lovingly cared for?

PREVENTION

What does work?

Applying a jug (1-2 litres) of water to the patch where a pet has just urinated will help dilute the urine and prevent a patch appearing. This requires the customer to be a vigilant watcher and may not always become a long-term habit.

Maintaining good moisture levels in the soil will allow the lawn to replace lost water quickly and revive itself fairly rapidly. Irrigating/watering the lawn with a sprinkler once a day may be needed, especially in the summer.

Increasing water intake of the pet. Dogs and cats can be encouraged to drink by making water more palatable. This can be done by making a change to the type of bowl used for water or paying attention to the temperature that the dog prefers their water to be. Customers can also purchase a “pet fountain” which will filter water and encourage pets to drink from it.

Feeding a higher quality diet to the pet will provide higher quality proteins that are easier to digest and produce less toxic urine.

Following the feeding guidelines. Many pet owners will overfeed their pets not realising that excess protein cannot be used and will simply be excreted in the urine. Pet foods are supplied with guidelines based on breed or size and should be adhered to (unless a vet says otherwise).

What may work?

Adding 2tbsp tomato juice, cider vinegar or similar to food. This one gives mixed results but the theory is logical; the acid in cider vinegar and the vitamin C in tomato juice help to neutralise the urine and make it less likely to scorch the lawn.

Special rocks are available to purchase from most pet shops that claim to prevent urine from scorching. The exact way that they do this is not clear but many have given them glowing reviews so it may be worth a shot!

Doing all of the above will help prevent urine patches but that’s a lot of changes to make all at once! Every pet and home are different so suggest all of the above to your customer and let them find the right combination that will solve the problem in the long-term.

REMEDY

Unfortunately, if the scorch has already occurred there is usually no instant fix. Sometimes the lawn may be revived with watering but otherwise, the options are…

Wait for the lawn to repair itself naturally. This should take a couple of months depending on the time of year. A nitrogen feed applied to the lawn (possibly as part of annual treatment programme) such as Ultimate 22-5-10 or DroughtSafe 19-3-9 will help the lawn to thicken and repair patches faster.

Trim out dead grass, overseed and top dress with a little soil/compost. Provide the area with plenty of water whilst new seed establishes. A liquid feed such as Seaweed Extract or Liquid ONYX™ can help seed germinate quicker and establish sooner.

Hopefully, the information above will help you tackle any urine-related problems on customer’s lawns. If you have any questions or other lawn related problems please get in touch!
The “meh” type of winter we have experienced (so far) means many professionals and homweowners are already dusting off their faithful mower and some are already cutting!
‘Is it too early to cut and treat?’ – the answer is no, but don’t wade in as if that 12 degree winter day is the same as our 12 degree summer day…

If the grass is growing and you are itching to get out there, use this quick checklist:

Assess … the weather, recent rainfall and what mix is the soil? Is it clay, silt, sand, or a combination? Excess moisture plus foot traffic can cause the soil to compress like a sponge – except it does not bounce back afterwards and roots need air gaps in the soil to take up nutrients.

Rake: Using a machine or hand rake – remove thatch* and leaves from the lawn – if you are bringing up soil on the tines or the grass stays flat then its safe to say cutting should be delayed

Cut: Sharpen mower blades because a blunt one will tear the leaf and leave it open to frost damage or disease. Set height – remove no more than one quarter the height - moss thrives in shorter grass. Use a 4 wheel mower ideally as roller mowers can compress moist winter soil and set up for poor conditions the rest of the year.

Spike: Aerate the soil. Only the most sandy soils will not benefit from spiking or hollow tine aeration to get more air to the roots and increase drainage.

Spread: Fertiliser – some forms of dissolved Nitrogen can descend through the soil by 1 cm per day – flushed by consistent rainfall. Applying in rainy conditions is therefore a waste of money. However, grass needs energy to grow – consider a urea based slow-release fertiliser as that ‘sticks’ to the soil and slows it down being available to the roots when conditions allow.

*Thatch: This is the dead material from the roots & shoots and in good biological conditions will be converted to rich humus soil. Some thatch is natural but excessive thatch stifles nutrients reaching the roots and potentially harbours disease and poor turf.

Many people dream of owning a home with a beautiful garden – somewhere to create their own outdoor space with plants glistening in the sun and a beautiful lawn for the children or pet to play on in the summer. The dream is always there, the reality though may be somewhat different if you live in the UK.

Unpredictable weather means that growing that perfect looking lawn may prove difficult and then dodging the rain during the summer months leaves the chances of using it properly few and far between. This is where artificial grass comes into its own. More and more people in the UK are turning to artificial grass to replace their lawn and we have decided to have a look at some of the reasons why.

Choice, choice, choice

Grass is grass, right? Wrong. Especially when considering artificial grass. You can have your fake grass created from a range of different materials in order to determine the feel and colour. There are plenty of specialist retailers, like UK-based NAM Grass, who offer a variety of different materials for your grass to be made from including polypropylene, polyethylene and polyamide depending on how soft you want the grass to be. Some materials are better for areas that are going to be used for sports while others are more suited to domestic use. No matter the material that you choose installation is very simple and depending on the size of the area that you are using it in can be done by yourself.

It Looks Good

Having a nice green looking lawn is what the majority of garden owners strive for, and while that isn’t always possible with natural grass it is pretty much guaranteed with artificial turf. There are no annoying weeds growing through that need pulling out every week, and there is no mud that can be traipsed everywhere. This also makes the grass usable after rain without worrying about getting dirty. Artificial grass is also the perfect option for pet owners, particularly those with dogs, as it can’t be dug up and be made to look untidy. Combine this with the fact that the grass is hard wearing and long lasting means that you’ll wonder what you ever did without it!

Low Maintenance

One of the major benefits of using artificial grass is that you can spend more time enjoying it and less time maintaining it as it will always be at that perfect height because it doesn’t grow. Artificial grass can be just as cost effective as buying turf and with the low maintenance running costs it can even work out cheaper over the course of time. This is also good for allergy sufferers who won’t have to worry about the freshly cut grass smell contributing to their hay fever.

While re-designing your garden doesn’t have to be a huge task it is always worth considering artificial grass as an alternative, especially if you are struggling to create that perfect looking lawn or are tired of having to keep up maintenance but still want to have grass. What are your thoughts on artificial grass? Do you have any experience of using it as an alternative to real grass? Let us know your experiences below.

The construction process for a 3G grass system includes installing either a dynamic (stone) or an engineered (macadam) sub base to give stable foundations, then an impact absorbing shockpad, then finally the synthetic turf carpet. Synthetic third generation sport surfacing can be installed in a range of dimensions and specifications with pile heights ranging from 40mm to 60mm to suit different sports such as football and rugby. The synthetic grass sports pitch surfacing system is completely porous, allowing for excellent water drainage which means the facility can be used in all weather conditions, this is a great quality for organisations such as schools and leisure centres.

Due to the advancements of artificial grass surfacing technology in recent years, 3G synthetic turf sports facilities can withstand a lot of use and require relatively little maintenance compared to a natural grass pitch. However it's still important to keep up a regular maintenance plan for a 3G pitch to ensure it's kept in top condition and is safe for use by everyone. The durability of this artificial sports surfacing means it can help generate extra revenue for an organisation as it can be rented out to clubs and teams for training sessions and matches in the evening. Extra equipment such as floodlighting and fencing can be installed along with the 3G surfacing to help make the most of the facility and keep it secure.

Sports and Safety Surfaces are experienced contractors in the installation of these 3G synthetic turf sports facilities and regularly carry out construction projects at a variety of locations throughout the UK. For more details about the products and services we offer, please visit where you can find information about 3G sports pitch surfacing, construction and maintenance.

Engineer returns from three-week holiday to find office pranksters have covered his entire workspace in grasshttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/engineer-returns-from-three-week-holiday-to-find-office-prankster2013-12-04T15:15:21.000Z2013-12-04T15:15:21.000ZLandscape Juicehttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/LandscapeJuice

Using artificial lighting and fast-growing grass seeds Mr Hurlbert, a senior manager at the company, managed to grow thick green turf all over the desk of Mr Harris, a software engineer.

Holywell-Cum-Needingworth Parish Council in Cambridgeshire has chosen Etesia's Attila 98X four-wheel-drive ride-on brushcutter to clear this sort of overgrown vegetation.

The Parish Council have responsibility for over 13 miles of designated walkways and common land, banks, slopes and uneven ground to keep open and in good order all year around which is no mean feat.

As Jane Bowd, Parish Clerk at Holywell-Cum-Needingworth Parish Council points out, "Much of the route is grass, scrub and rough turf. The terrain is often uneven or waterlogged as some of the houses in the parish are built on a bank which is not easy to reach, but still require maintaining. It’s public money that we spend so we have to look at other products, but we’re very happy to stay with Etesia because we know that are excellent at what they do – nothing can compare to these machines.”

With a cutting width of 98cm and up to eight cutting heights which can be adjusted by centralised lever, the Etesia Attila 98X ride-on brushcutter is reliable, efficient, comfortable and safe to use. Special attention has been paid to sound and vibration levels to reduce them to a very low level. A low centre of gravity, four-wheel-drive and a powerful 23HP Briggs & Stratton engine plus heavy-tread tyres and differential lock provide greater stability on slopes up to 30°.

“We call it the Daddy – it even pulls logs out of the way and does everything a ‘normal’ mower can do and so much more,” explains Ian Armstrong, Head Groundsman for the Parish Council. “It goes through waist high material with ease – nothing seems to stop it.

“When we do our hedge cutting around the outside perimeter of the sports pitches, we leave the branches on the ground and just run over them. Then, when we cut the grass the Etesia mulches it all up. It’s so fast and is certainly the best mower for what it does on the market – no question.”

“As with any grounds maintenance tasks, we don’t get a lot of feedback from residents when the areas are looking good, but when it looks bad – we certainly do,” added Jane. “The past year, with the poor weather, we had some complaints at the beginning of the year with the length of the grass as our other mowers couldn’t get onto the grass to cut it. We have a policy here to mulch, rather than cut and collect, so we just took the Etesia AV98X out to cut all the areas that the other mowers couldn’t.

“You can’t expect our groundsmen to do the job if they haven’t got the right tools – with Etesia they know that they can’t use that as an excuse.”

For further information, or to arrange a free demonstration, please contact Etesia UK on 01295 680120 or visit www.etesia.co.uk

You can view a video of Ian Armstrong by visiting the company’s Youtube channel by clicking here

For more news, reviews and insightful views, you can follow Etesia on Twitter @EtesiaUK and like the company’s Facebook page – www.facebook.com/EtesiaUK.

Organic Lawn Carehttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/organic-lawn-care2013-06-17T15:30:00.000Z2013-06-17T15:30:00.000ZAndover Turf Supplieshttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/AndoverTurfSupplies

Lawn care in the US or UK is no small matter. Industry statistics estimate that up to $40 billion is spent on lawns, and that in the US alone, they account for 30 million acres of land. The vast amount of money spent on lawn care is no testimony to their being healthy however. Organic lawn care on the other hand, can lead to rich green surfaces, the reduction of use of harmful chemicals and be of enormous help to the environment. That's the emphasis of this article.

A lawn has to be seen as a living organism. Once you have this understanding, you will then tend to treat your lawn with all the care it needs. When you start with organic lawn care, the first step is to test the soil. This will enable you to know the nutrients that are lacking in it, and thus allow you to use organic fertilizers or additives to compensate the lawn with. The soil must also contain worms, bugs and other microorganisms that will aid growth. Compost can be the best fertilizer. This can easily be obtained from local nurseries, but you will do well to learn how to set up your own compost heap, so that you produce such compost yourself. Information on making such compost heaps is widely available over the Internet, with a number of sites giving very clear instructional videos, that will make setting up such compost pits a very simple affair. This can also help you to get rid of your household waste in an environmentally friendly manner. You can also use organic protein based fertilizers like coffee grounds, alfalfa meal and corn gluten meal. Each of them release nitrogen slowly while they are digested by the microorganisms present in the soil. Seaweed can also make a good fertilizer for organic lawn care.

Once you have your soil tested and the nutrient deficiency attended to, you then need to select the right grass for your lawn. Look around your neighborhood and get details of the lawn that most impresses you from your neighbors. Decide on whether you want to start with your lawn by going through the seeding process, or will prefer to buy sods (or turf) from the local nursery, so that you can unfurl natures carpet.

Once your lawn has been treated with seed or sod, you need to ensure that there is no footfall until the grass takes hold and becomes established. Seeding may demand you restrict footfall for a prolonged period, or until the blades have gained sufficient length. Hydration is very important during these initial stages and must be done with a lot of care, so that the growing seed or new sod is not disturbed.

Once the lawn has become established, you need to keep up a regular schedule of maintenance for watering it, mowing it and de-weeding it. An excess of water must be avoided. Weeds need to be removed from their roots and mowing restricted to one third of leaf height. Occasionally, it can also be a good idea to aerate the lawn. This ensures that the roots of the grass remain healthy. Aeration also helps the lawn to retain water that can help its growth. There are some very simple ways of ensuring such aeration, the obvious one being walking over the lawn with spiked shoes. Attachments are also available for lawn mowers that can achieve the same effect.

Artificial Grass Essex: Giggins Landscaping.https://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/artificial-grass-essex-giggins-landscaping2013-05-27T13:03:51.000Z2013-05-27T13:03:51.000ZDean Gigginshttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/DeanGiggins

Chafford Hundred, Essex. Clean them, grease them if necessary and store away until the spring - don't forget to drain and store your sprinklers and hoses too.

Here are one or two winter lawn care tips to ensure that come spring time your lawn is fresh, green and beautiful.

" Make sure that your lawn is clean and tidy - don't leave toys, leaves or debris on the lawn over the winter time. The grass can be smothered by debris as well as encouraging mice, insects and other pests to visit and damage your lawn. It can also help to create disease like conditions which can damage your lawn further through the winter.

" On your last couple of mows before winter sets in lower your mower blades at little - you don't want to leave the grass too long which can also cause diseases and even smother it. Be sure however not to completely scalp the grass which will expose bare patches and the most vulnerable part of the grass to the harsh weather conditions.

" Try not to walk over your lawn too much in the winter time - and tell the rest of the household the same thing.

Dormant grass can tolerate a small amount of traffic whilst it is under snow but too much will make it too compacted to come back nice and green in the springtime and you will notice bare paths across the lawn.

How To Lay Turf ... Like A Pro.https://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/how-to-lay-turf-like-a-pro2013-05-20T02:30:00.000Z2013-05-20T02:30:00.000ZWiltshire Turfhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/WiltshireTurf

The best thing about laying turf to establish a fresh lawn is the rapid transformation. In this article, we will show you a step-by-step how guide on how to lay turf ... like a pro.

1. Prepare your tools

For this type of project, you will only need a spade, some planks, a rake, a long knife, a garden hose, a wheelbarrow, a sprinkler, and turf cutter.

2. Prepare your soil

Even the most expensive garden turf will not look its best if your soil is of poor quality. So, before you do any work, check your soil. If it’s too dry and crumbles in your hands, enrich your soil to encourage the turf's rapid and deep root growth.

Having strong roots will ensure that you have a lawn that’s drought-resistant and uses water and nutrients effectively. It also makes your lawn more visually appealing because they lead to a denser sward of grass.

If the area to be turfed has an existing lawn or is overrun by weeds, treat it with a non-selective weed killer at least fourteen days before you start. Then remove any unwanted grass with turf cutter.

3. Calculate your turf and topsoil requirements

This will require a bit of math. Measure the area to be turfed then multiply the length by the width. Add 5% to the product. The result is the number of rolls you need. Since most turf suppliers roll out their product in square meters, it would be easier if you measure your lawn in meter units.

As to how much top soil you need, measure the depth, length and width of the area to be covered, then multiply them together to get the volume you need. If you’re not confident about your math, simply go online and search for “turf product calculator.”

You need AT LEAST 100mm of good soil that’s free from any stone, debris and weeds. Always, buy your top soil and turf from a reputable supplier. Also, have the top soil delivered a couple of days before the turf so that you can adequately prepare.

4. Lay the top soil

Once your top soil has been loosened, it should be lightly compacted. You can do this by walking over the top soil and smoothing the surface as you do. Then rake the surface until the soil has been evenly worked over. Water the top soil at least two days before the turf arrives. Rake again before you lay the turf.

5. Lay the turf

Start laying the turf immediately. If you have a round area, start from the center then work your way out. If you have a rectangular-shaped area, start from a straight edge. Lay the turfs closely to one another so that there are no gaps. (Gaps cause the grass to dry out). On the succeeding rows, lay them out in brickwork style.

Do not step on a newly-laid turf, but if you need to, walk over it with a plank. When you’re done, lightly press on the turf with a rake, making sure that the turfs have good contact with the soil. Do NOT use a roller. Also, do not pull a turf into a joint, always push. Fill in any cracks by lightly distributing topsoil and even the ground.

6. Water your lawn

Water your lawn immediately after you’re done. Do this for several days until the turf gets firmly rooted.

Reliability of mowing equipment is essential for this work which is why one Sussex landscape contractor chooses Etesia for all grass cutting operations.

Green Grass Services, set up by John Vincent five years ago, specialises in grass cutting and landscape maintenance in the south east of England. In over 30 years of working within the industry John says that there isn’t a pedestrian mower he hasn’t used. The company ensures that there is always an Etesia mower in their fleet of maintenance equipment and has done for over twenty years.

“When we spoke to Matt Clark at South East Groundcare about which mower would be best suited for this type of work, we stressed the importance of the ability to cope with cutting in all weather conditions without clogging. Etesia are renowned for being able to cut in the wet and our previous experience with their machines was excellent. We decided to change our entire fleet over to the Pro 46 PHTS.

“The Pro 46’s are light and easy to manoeuvre when grass cutting and also light enough to lift on/off our commercial vehicles. We just empty the grass boxes and take for green waste when each job is finished. The quality of cut is always excellent. The mowers are worked really hard throughout the year and just routine servicing is all we ever need. They are a real work-horse. You certainly get what you pay for and they were a sound investment, more than earning their keep.”The Single bladed Etesia Pro 46 has a 5hp 160cc Honda engine. Cutting width is 46cm, the detachable grass box with ‘full’ indicator has a capacity of 52 litres, and overall weight is just 37kg. Designed around the operator, the handlebars are ergonomically shaped and mounted for ease-of-use. New ‘soft-touch’ controls reduce pressure on the hands and fingers during operation. Extensive testing of these latest models has shown low vibration levels that meet stringent Health and Safety guidelines. There are six models available in the range, with options including mulching facility.

“The Pro 46 is well built, solid and 100% reliable. We can’t be without them. If you want a commercial mower to last, which is trouble free, buy an Etesia.”

For further information, or to arrange a free demonstration, please contact Etesia UK on 01295 680120 or visit www.etesia.co.uk

To view a video of John talking about the PHTS, please click here.

For more news, reviews and insightful views, you can follow Etesia on Twitter @EtesiaUK and like the company’s Facebook page – www.facebook.com/EtesiaUK.

Hybrid grass could reduce flooding impacthttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/hybrid-grass-could-reduce-flooding-impact2013-04-28T07:59:29.000Z2013-04-28T07:59:29.000ZLandscape Juicehttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/LandscapeJuice

A hybrid farmland grass, developed by a team of UK researchers, could help reduce flooding, a study has shown.

A team of plant and soil scientists said tests showed the new cultivar reduced run-off by 51%, compared with a variety widely used to feed livestock.

They added that rapid growth and well developed root systems meant that more moisture was retained within the soil rather than running into river systems.

The findings appear in the journal Scientific Reports.

The novel grass is a hybrid of perennial ryegrass (Lollium perenne) - which is widely planted by farmers for grazing livestock - and meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis), which has environmental stress-resistant characteristics.

Greener grass

Co-author Kit Macleod, senior research scientist at the James Hutton Institute based in Aberdeen, said a long-term project had been developing novel forage grasses but their environmental benefits had not really been tested.

Funding of almost £600,000 from the Welsh Government’s Academic Expertise for Business (A4B) programme is supporting the project, which will see a biorefining process used to isolate and extract sugars and other components from ryegrass and convert them into low carbon products.

These low carbon products will include biofuels, platform chemicals and pulp-moulded packaging products for retail applications such as food packaging.

The project will collaborate with six industrial partners representing all the links in the supply chain – from biomass cultivation and harvesting to processing and commercial end-use – and will demonstrate the production of these materials at a pilot scale.

Waitrose will research public engagement in the bioeconomy and the adoption of green products. Quentin Clarke, Head of Sustainability at Waitrose, said: "Waitrose is working hard to use easy to recycle, sustainable materials for its packaging, so there is a natural synergy between this project and Waitrose’s approach to 'Treading Lightly' and reducing its environmental footprint."

"Moving to easily recycled fibre-based packaging for foods, where this can show positive environmental benefit, is something we’re keen to develop and a key element of this project will be engaging with the public from an early stage to ensure we are delivering solutions that meet their needs. We look forward to trialling prototypes with key stakeholders," he added.

Minister for Business, Enterprise, Technology and Science, Edwina Hart AM, said: "It’s good to see two Welsh institutions working with such a wide range of partner businesses, both indigenous and multi-national, on a novel project with commercial potential."

"I am pleased the Academic Expertise for Business programme is supporting this collaborative working and partnership between industry and academia with the aim of developing and bringing new products to market," she added.

Dr Adam Charlton, of Bangor University’s Biocomposites Centre, welcomed the Welsh Government’s support for the project and said the complementary expertise of the two Welsh universities and industrial partners would be key to its success. He said: "A key objective of the project will be the creation of products with a lower carbon output than those produced from oil. Activating a green industry in this way is a global aim and we hope to demonstrate an integrated approach to land utilisation."

"We don’t want to displace existing agricultural activity, but aim to provide farmers with an opportunity to diversify and find alternative applications for surplus grass produced in the UK. Through forging relationships with world-class organisations with significant market insight, the project offers real possibility to commercialise a number of product streams from ryegrass," he added.

The mild weather in Glasgow and Central Scotland means that grass has actually been growing and we have had the mowers out on a few occasions.

Up until the start of February many lawns were incredibly boggy. There had been a lot of rainfall on top of hard ground which left it pooling, unable to drain properly. During this time we stayed away from lawns as far as possible to prevent any root damage and surface marking. But now things appear to be a bit warmer (despite the forecast for snow tomorrow!) we have been able to get out and do some raking, edging and clearing up all sorts of debris and leaves from our lawns.

The aim for 2012 is to ensure that, as always, our lawns are properly cut, fed and treated. Much of the ground in Bearsden and Milngavie is clay so most of our lawns benefit from top dressing, generally after being aerated with hollow tines. Any steps that improve the clay soil structure generally benefit grass growth, from air and water transfer to nutrient uptake and root growth. A lawn with compacted soil and poor grass roots will not last for very long.

In general, we are looking forward to the season and again being able to offer our clients exactly the lawn treatment they require. No extras or unnecessary sales, just thorough and dependable lawn treatment.

JUTAgrass - WWW.JUTA.CO.UKhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/jutagrass-www-juta-co-uk2012-01-25T14:45:27.000Z2012-01-25T14:45:27.000ZMorgan Barlowhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/MorganBarlow

JUTA are European leaders in a range of markets. We are equally capable of cutting a carefully manicured lawn and helping you with a regime of lawn treatments, lawn fertilizer applications and spring or autumn lawn scarifying to keep it at its very best or regularly cutting larger area of longer, rougher grass around commercial sites. We have a small fleet of different mowers to help us give the best possible finish, whatever the area.

For the majority of domestic and some 'premium' commercial lawns, we use roller mowers to leave a high quality, classically striped lawn. For other commercial contracts, for example pub beer gardens/restaurants and other small commercial lawns that we cut regularly, we use a mulching mower. This helps us provide a cost effective service as there are no lawn clippings to dispose of. This machine can be quickly converted to collect, as in the autumn or winter lawns may become covered with leaves, which cannot be mulched.

We also have ride on mowers suitable to collect, mulch or discharge clippings - offering a variety of options for our commercial clients and domestic customers who have a larger property.

But we don't just do grass cutting - we also carry out professional hedge trimming and hedge reductions too. Indeed many hedges have been proved to benefit from being cut regularly, we recommend twice yearly cuts to leylandii and beech hedges (dependent on the speed of growth). Regular cutting not only keeps the hedge under control but also promotes vigorous, healthy growth and prevent the hedge looking sparse and 'thin'.

Many customers are thankful of the fact that as part of our service package, we remove all green and garden waste from their properties, taking it for composting at Organic Recycling in Crowland. For more details on how they help us deal with our waste in an environmentally friendly way, see their website at: www.organicrecycling.co.uk

Our association with Organic Recycling also means that we can offer our customers their range of quality soil improvers, marketed under the name Bettaland Products. See www.bettaland.co.uk for details. We have achieved good results with these products in breaking up the heavy, clay soil which some areas of Spalding suffer with.

As we work a relatively small geographical area, we are able to provide a highly cost domestic garden and commercial grounds maintenance effective service, without compromising on quality. We offer regular services to all areas around Spalding, including Moulton, Weston, Pinchbeck (Including Pinchbeck West), Gosberton (including Clough and Risegate), Pode Hole, Spalding and others besides.

Fixed price services help you budget for the works, whilst we offer a choice of payment systems to help make payment simple. We are confident that in time mulching on this site will help improve the grass through feeding the poor and nutrient lacking soil that exists on several of the grass areas.

We can provide professional lawn mowing to domestic and commercial 'fine lawns' and also offer rough grass cutting services to all properties in and around the Spalding, Moulton, Gosberton, Pinchbeck and Pode Hole areas. The kind of people who dream about having a beautiful garden no matter how large or small that will add that little bit of extra to their homes. Some people just aren't cut out for gardening, I know because I'm one of them, and the mess that the builders left when they moved out with the bits of pipe poking out here and the lumps of concrete there are all that remains. But really it doesn't have to be that way, Unreal Gardens are here to help you create that visually fabulous and funtional, low maintenance garden which not only reduces the maintenance required to keep your garden the way you want it, but it will also add value to your house too.

So Spring is definitely around the corner (or so the weather men say) and in fairness we've already seen the Crocus' pushing their heads through and the Daffodils, the grass is starting to grow and some of the tree's are starting to bud and last weekend I succombed to the temptation to get cracking in the garden too. I often site looking out the patio doors across the garden and what seems to have been an incredibly long winter this year has certainly taken its toll on our garden. We had two huge Cordyline's which due to the snow we had through December kicked the bucket so they were the first to go. I now have two holes where they once lived which I feel will be just right for some of our stunning Artificial Bay Laurels.

So instant improvement made with the dead ones gone, it simply drew attention to how grubby and dirty the decking had got because of all the water and lack of sun. Instead of that nice deck brown colour the whole area just looked green and awful. So out came the pressure washer (or rather back it came from the neighbours) and I set about getting the grime and moss deposited throughout the winter washed away. Six hours I was at it and while it was wet I have to say it looked like quite a good job had been done - but as soon as it dried it looked really bad kind of resembling an old disused pier at the seaside. Not very nice at all - Wait for it, yes you've got it - Unreal Gardens have a solution for all this unnecessary work. We will offer a range of what is commonly known as Composite decking (call or email us for more details) which give the look of wood but without all the hard work and maintenance of keeping it, and it looks as good in years to come as the day it was installed.

Composite decking is essentially a product which is made from waste materials otherwise destined for landfill. Primarilly it is made of wood fibres and waste plastics and then coloured and patterned to give the look of real timber. So not only do these product give you reduced maintenance benefits, they also mean you are doing your bit for the environment too.

So that will be one of the projects outlined for the Unreal Residence once the business is stable this spring/summer - tear up all the old wooden decking and replace it with maintenance free composite decking. Another bonus is we will be able to still use the original joists so all the structure won't need redoing, kind of like relaying new floorboards.

So project no1 outlined for this year and subsequent others also in the pipeline such as a new lawn in the front garden, a patch of lawn in the back garden, fencing to replace the list goes on but my plan is to write about these here and we'll also probably feature some of our customers gardens too as we go along.

So I'll sign off for now and wish you all a good weekend, and lookforward to blogging again soon.

John,

Unreal Gardens Ltd.
