Part of his day-to-day duties include the maintenance of both the one and a half outdoor and one 70 x 50 metre indoor synthetic pitches at the training ground, which are used 7-days-a-week.

With that amount of activity; it is vitally important a regular maintenance programme is followed to keep the synthetic surfaces in tip-top condition at all times. This involves a combination of light or heavy brushes to even out the distribution of rubber crumb on a daily basis.

“An important part of my job is to work with key suppliers within the industry. Here at Tottenham Hotspur; we have a number of key suppliers that we work with from fertilisers and chemicals and in my view, most importantly – machinery; where we will use two or three key suppliers to make sure that we get all of the equipment that we need for the specific jobs we are required to do. An integral part of our synthetic surface maintenance equipment is the SISIS Flexicomb and Zig Zag brushes, which we use on a regular basis throughout the week.”

The SISIS Flexicomb has 52 sets of polypropylene bristles which can be made stiffer or softer by simple adjustment of the crossbar. On synthetic surfaces the Flexicomb grooms the pitch, standing up the carpet fibres and returns the surface to a perfect playing condition ensuring an even distribution of infill material. The system is also just as effective on natural turf and can, depending on the chosen setting, be used as a brush or as a rake – versatility which has impressed Darren.

“The main reason for our use of the Flexicomb is its versatility. Not only do we use it on the synthetic pitches but also our natural pitches. We find it useful to use after training sessions where we will go over the area with the brushes which stands the grass up ready for us to hoover up any debris.”

“The SISIS brushes are so simple to use. There are times when we need to de-compact the synthetic surface which requires a stiffer setting and there are other times where we are just looking for a light brush over of the surface, but it only takes minutes to adjust. The system is very quick and keeps presentation of the surface very high.

The best feature on the SISIS synthetic equipment is its flexibility. The Zig Zag brush is very important at the front to even out the rubber crumb before the Flexicomb comes behind and is brilliant at standing up the fibres and evenly distributing the rubber infill.

We’ve had outstanding success with the Flexicomb and would fully recommend it to be used on any synthetic surface.”

For further information or a no obligation demonstration, please contact SISIS on 01332 824 777 or visit www.sisis.com

For more news, reviews and insightful views, you can follow SISIS on Twitter @SISISMachinery and like the company’s Facebook page – www.facebook.com/SISISMachinery. This was followed by a presentation from Patrick Hulbert of Bowls International magazine, and a former international player, on what players want from their bowling green. Patrick then gave attendees an update of Bowls England, the sport’s governing body.

The morning session was concluded by an ‘on the green’ demonstration of the bowling green maintenance equipment from both Dennis and SISIS focusing on the benefits scarification, aeration, verticutting, brushing and cutting bring to a green.

After lunch, Matt Gresty from Limagrain discussed choosing the correct grass seed for a bowling green along with spring maintenance and how to control weeds and moss before Alan Ronaldson from Dennis and SISIS gave an in-depth presentation on mower maintenance, service intervals, and tell-tale signs of neglect & what to look out for.

The day finished with the infamous ‘turf clinic’ question and answer session.
"We had some very positive feedback from attendees, who said that they found the day informative and interesting,” commented Ewen Wilson. “We have a strong track record of hosting these educational seminars and we are looking forward to hosting further seminars for greenkeepers and groundsmen in later in the year.”

Mr Blacklock from North Tyneside local authority said: "I've found the day to be very useful and informative with excellent presentations and worthwhile attending. Here, Alan Abel from Complete Weed Control gives his monthly advice on what to look out for.

Council cut-backs are showing up across the country making driving even more hazardous than usual. With species like hogweed, thistles, docks, etc. growing quicker and higher than grasses; a judicious spray of a selective herbicide mixed with trinexapac-ethyl PGR is the way forward.

It would increase safety by a huge percentage and save money for councils as the grass would be lower and less dense when a cut finally became necessary.

This practice is a proven mix and will be a major player in the control of amenity grass and weed growth throughout many county council spheres of work including housing areas and open spaces. When budgets are being attacked so severely, people must look outside the box and see what is available that is both cost effective and does the job.

Staying with Councils, the 'lowest price' seems to be the way they are going when awarding some contracts. But this does not always mean the cheapest option for them in the long run.

Their officers may have to run around more to ensure the job is happening and being carried out as per the specification. Depending how much of the above occurs and how many complaints are received at the switchboard, the actual cost may end being considerably higher than the original tender price.

With so many hoops to jump through, as a contractor, applying pesticides safely throughout the UK and Ireland, CWC have achieved the Amenity Approved Standard, ISO 9001 and 14002 across all our Franchisees.

We adhere to these standards every day, and NOT just the day of the audit.
With our WEED-IT technology blazing a trail down many street pavements, our franchisees comply with EU legislation and the new herbicide labelling on glyphosate products.

The law is that only spot treatment of weeds on hard surfaces is permitted. This law, as long as it is adhered to by ALL personnel applying Glyphosate to street pavements and other hard surfaces, will prolong the life of glyphosate.

If it is used incorrectly and perhaps blanket sprayed, then it may be found in water courses. The water framework directive gives the Environment Agency the power to closely look for pesticides in water. The result could be the withdrawal of glyphosate from use.

This would be disastrous for all of us, resulting in much higher food prices as agriculture would be hit hard and the cost of keeping the streets and high profile amenity areas clear of weeds would be colossal.

For more information, please contact Complete Weed Control’s National office on 01325 324 277 or visit www.completeweedcontrol.co.uk. The college campus sits on 1,400 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, along the shores of Hartwell Lake. With over 50 sports clubs operating, it is vitally important that sports surfaces are always kept in peak condition.

“The pitches work hard all-year-round so compaction along with thatch can be serious issues if it is not dealt with in the proper manner," commented Ernest. “After an extensive search for the correct machinery to carry out these key tasks, we spoke to Ian Camp from C.S. Trading who recommended the SISIS Veemo and Multislit. We received a demonstration, and were so impressed that we decided to purchase both pieces of kit.”

Thatch accumulation is one of the most common turf related problems experienced by today's turf managers. Because of the ever-increasing demands placed on sports facilities throughout the year, effective management is essential. De-thatching is important to encourage germination and the Veemo allows Ernest to verticut the university’s sportsfields, whilst removing the thatch build-up in an efficient, timely manner.

The Veemo has three floating heads independent from the main frame which move in all degrees of motion and follow any undulations of the ground on a fairway without any danger of damaging the turf, whilst the tungsten tipped hook blades with variable spacing cut effectively through the thatch layer. Depth of cut is infinitely variable by means of a micro-adjuster on each unit.

Fitted with a direct drive to tine shaft via hydraulic motors mounted on the de-thatching units is something that has been a major plus to Ernest. “The performance and power from this machine has been superb.”

The SISIS Multislit is a tractor mounted deep slitting aerator which is suitable for the maintenance of soccer, rugby, cricket pitches and golf courses. The slitter, featuring 40 sharpened fine turf tines, can be used on a compact tractor, minimising the overall weight on the surface.

The Multislit produces excellent underground cultivation due to the angle of the tines. The spiral design of tine shaft assist penetration and its simple design requires little maintenance.

“The ease of operation and the end result achieved are the best features of the Multislit. The grounds maintenance crew like using both machines because of the results you get from them. Using them has become part of our maintenance schedule.

“SISIS manufacture turf maintenance machines that are not luxury items, but necessities,” said Ernest.

For further SISIS product information or a no obligation demonstration, please contact CS Trading on (864) 843 5972 or visit www.sisis.com.

For more news, reviews and insightful views, you can follow SISIS on Twitter @SISISMachinery and like the company’s Facebook page – www.facebook.com/SISISMachinery.
Gregor Steele, from Perthshire, suffered severe injuries when his left leg was trapped between a tractor pulling a heavy water bowser and the bucket of a loading shovel. The accident happened on 3 September 2010.

Mr Steele, 20, who had been employed by Gallagher Groundworks since leaving school, was airlifted to hospital where he underwent a nine-hour operation in an attempt to save his leg. Despite undergoing a second operation his leg was amputated above the knee on 10 September 2010.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) successfully prosecuted Gallagher Groundworks at Perth Sheriff Court 19 December 2013.

The court was told that between 13 August and 3 September 2010 the company failed to make a suitable and sufficient risk assessment for the work being carried out and failed to ensure that the machinery being used was appropriate for the work, was properly maintained and that safety equipment was fully operative.

This has done amazingly well this year - I think it liked the hot conditions.. I now find that it has flopped over so not longer erect at all but more like a blob. The solution has been to divide it which rejuventates and allows it to stand more upright. I find this works for all manner of herbaceous perennials - but for some, like sedum, now is the wrong time of year.
Professor Löfstedt’s suggestion was that the current HSE approval process went beyond the minimum requirement laid out in EU legislation.

Impact of the proposed changes

Removing the HSE approval process will give businesses greater flexibility to choose a training provider and first aid training that is right for their work place, and based on their individual business needs. The provider will be required to meet a certain standard, set by HSE.

The legal requirement for employers to ensure they have an adequate number of suitably trained first aiders (or appointed persons) in accordance with their first aid needs assessment will remain unchanged.

Consultation and draft guidance for businesses

Following public consultation, HSE is working towards implementing the necessary changes, subject to HSE Board and Parliamentary approval.

The anticipated changes to the Regulations are expected in October 2013.

HSE has used the responses to the recent consultation exercise to shape three draft guidance documents that reflect the proposed changes in the regulations and the arrangements necessary to put adequate first aid provision in place.

The first guidance document will help businesses to make an assessment of the first aid requirements within their specific workplace and to put the necessary provisions and competent personnel in place.

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 and guidance

The second guidance document will help businesses select an appropriate first aid training provider to deliver their training requirements within the new system.

Selecting a first-aid training provider

A third document presents example first aid needs assessment scenarios that will help to demonstrate to employers from all sectors the factors that they need to consider to ensure they fully understand their first aid needs and put in place appropriate arrangements in order to comply with the law.

Next steps and feedback

Businesses are not required to take any action until the new regulations come into force, but in the mean time HSE would like to know what you thought of the draft guidance documents. Any comments or suggestions can be sent tofirstaidconsultation@hse.gsi.gov.uk Please mark any mail ‘Guidance Comments’.

Employers are reminded that until the necessary legislative changes take effect that the existing law continues to apply - all first aid training for the purposes of first aid at work provision must be carried out by an HSE approved training provider or a training centre for an Ofqual accredited awarding organisation supported by HSE to deliver such training (these are listed on the HSE first aid web pages).

Similarly, the current edition of L74, ‘First Aid at Work’ (Approved Code of Practice and Guidance) will remain valid and in force until new legislation and associated guidance takes effect.

He has now found a way of achieving this that is easier and far less obtrusive to visitors.

It is the Trust's Greener Garden Fund for more ecologically sound outdoor upkeep of its properties that aided the purchase of a Pellenc Helion lithium-ion battery-powered hedge trimmer and Pellenc Excelion lithium-ion battery-powered strimmer, which was supplied by local dealer Surrey Power.

Work to keep the property’s garden trim begins in mid-May and finishes in late October, which is peak visiting time and before now, when petrol equipment was previously used. This presented Chris with a variety of health and safety issues as well as user and visitor discomfort. Noise levels, petrol fumes and carrying petrol cans around site were the main offenders.

The Pellenc range of products use a back-pack battery and drastically cuts noise, user fatigue, and detrimental effect on passing visitors. These plusses alone would tick boxes in the Trust's Greener Garden checklist, but a further bonus at Polesden Lacey is that power for the batteries comes from an on-site solar panel. Three to four hours of free charging is enough for a day's operation, so Chris’ cutting work is about as energy efficient as you can get and with zero carbon emission.

Whether you are using the pole, universal or telescopic model, the range of Helion hedge trimmers will improve your working conditions. They are extremely light (between 3 kg and 4 kg) thanks to the use of a revolutionary 1,200W motor developed by Pellenc.

By using the 4-speed selector switch, you can adapt your tool to the type of cut required. For easy topping off, the flexible +90°/-45° head is fitted on Pole and Telescopic models, whilst a +/-90° pivoting handle has been fitted on the Universal model for vertical cutting.

The Excelion brushcutter is a unique tool as it combines a brush and a grass cutter in one, whilst the multifunction head, developed by Pellenc, can be fitted, without the use of tools. The 4-speed selector, exclusive to Pellenc, makes it easier to adapt to the vegetation: slow speeds are recommended for edges and urban areas for example. Silent, rapid and extremely lightweight, Excelion is the new brush cutter for professionals.

"The new Pellenc equipment is a lot more user-friendly compared to the petrol equivalent and the environmental advantages are considerable," he says. "We are a lot more comfortable doing the work when visitors are here because they are not inconvenienced at all. In fact, they do not even notice we are here and that means we can start our maintenance work much earlier in the day."

Chris has four full-time staff in his department and upwards of forty regular volunteers. He says that a real bonus is that the new battery-powered equipment is used with ease by everyone involved in the garden maintenance work.

"The benefit here of switching to battery-powered equipment is the ease of use. They are so much lighter, yet just as effective as petrol machines, and of course quieter, free of fumes, and without potential harmful vibration."

Pellenc is exclusively distributed in the UK by Etesia UK.
The 65-year-old, who does not want to be named, suffered three fractured vertebrae, broken ribs and sternum, lung damage and a head wound that required stitches in the incident at a cottage undergoing renovation on 6 October 2011.

He was in intensive care for three weeks, has yet to make a full recovery and is unlikely to work again.

Barnstaple Magistrates' Court heard today (20 March) that his employer, G Loosemore and Son Ltd, had been contracted to build a two-storey extension at the rear of a cottage.

The ground worker was engaged in excavation work on land that sloped steeply upwards. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that his excavator was working on a level of ground at approximately roof height with the cottage in order to dig out material to make way for a terrace area and exterior steps leading to upper garden levels.

He needed to change the excavator's bucket during the work, but as he exited the cab he stumbled. He tried to steady himself by grabbing hold of a handle attached to the lift arm, but it came away in his hand and he fell approximately five metres down a slope and onto the path behind the cottage. He hit his head on a large stone as he fell and was knocked unconscious.

HSE established that there was no edge protection to prevent a fall to the area behind the cottage, and no steps were taken to support the excavation prior to the later installation of a supporting wall. The investigation also identified that there had been several falls of material from the main excavation area before the worker fell. These should have served as a warning, but no action was taken.

A Prohibition Notice was subsequently served to prevent any further excavation work at the site until a competent person had made an assessment and provided a safe system of work.

G Loosemore & Son Ltd, of Roundswell Business Park, Barnstaple, Devon, was fined a total of £12,000 and ordered to pay £11,210 in costs after pleading guilty to breaches of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007.

Speaking after the hearing, HSE Inspector Annette Walker said:

"The dangers of working at height without adequate edge protection, and the risks associated with excavation collapse, are very clear. Yet companies and individuals continue to take risks and cut corners.

"In this case, significant harm occurred in respect of a fall from height. G Loosemore & Son Ltd could and should have done more to prevent the fall from the top of the bank, but this was only addressed as a consequence of the incident.

"There were a number of collapses of material prior to the fall that should have prompted the company to take earlier action, but these warnings were ignored. It illustrated there were serious risks, but they were disregarded.

"Today's prosecution should remind all involved in excavation work, or general work at height, of their legal duties to safely manage activity and provide the necessary protection."

Further information about working safely at height can be found on the HSE website at www.hse.gov.uk/falls. Looks even worse than the weeds did and takes AGES for the grass to grow back.

Secondly, we wouldn't recommend the use of a 3 in 1 product such as weed, feed and mosskiller. Firstly these products actually complicate the task as you are effectively feeding the weed that you are trying to kill as it has just received a lovely dose of fertiliser to make to grow, also we have yet to find one that give effective results on all lawn weeds, in fact white clover often seems to grow better after these products have been applied!

You could dig them all out by hand, but this can be difficult and very, very time consuming, especially if you have a large lawn.
Also remember that any small piece of weed root left, especially those of dandelions - WILL grow back....

So what does this leave us with?

SELECTIVE LAWN WEEDKILLERS - these products actively kill lawn weeds but don't affect the grass in the same way that Roundup or other gyphosphate based weedkillers do.

Verdone is possibly the best known of the liquid lawn weedkillers and can be bought from the garden centre as can Vitax Lawn Clear - many of you may have tried these products in the past and had differing or poor results. They can also be time consuming and fiddly to apply needing a watering can with a fine rose and a LOT of trips backwards and forwards to the tap to refill it, as well as the time spent measuring out the area, avoiding overlaps and most frustratingly running out of concentrate just a few metres short of the end of the lawn - which invariably seems to be the patch where most weeds are!...

So what other options are there?

Talk to your local, independent lawn maintenance professional!

Due to licensing restrictions homeowners are simply not allowed to buy many of the most powerful and hence effective, lawn weed killing chemicals.

Whereas there are only a handful of relatively expensive products available to homeowners, professional users have access to a wide variety of different products, most of which are much, much stronger than can be bought in the garden centre.

ANP Services Spalding are NPTC qualified for application of selective herbicides (the full title for lawn weedkillers) via knapsack sprayer and we will be able to assess whether your lawn needs spot treating for small areas of weeds or needs fully 'blanket spraying' for total coverage.

We can quickly and effectively cover large areas with our 1 metre spray per pass spray width coupled to our 20 litre capacity Cooper Pegler knapsack sprayer and careful use of a spray head shield where necessary means that your prized border plants will not be affected by spray drift.

We offer free no obligation quotations on this service and can also provide all year round care for your lawn, including regular professional mowing, fertilising, moss control and scarifying.

As with most independent lawn care professionals, there is no pressure with us to 'sign up' to a full year round package, we won't sell you things that you don't actually need and we will carry out all treatments at the seasonally correct time.

If you would like a quote to professionally treat your lawn or grassed area for weeds and you are within our coverage area, feel free to contact us:

Office - 01775 830250 - Mobile - 07745 247488

Email - info@lawncarespalding.co.uk

Website - www.anpservicesspalding.com

Supplying plants after extreme weatherhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/supplying-plants-after-extreme2013-02-26T15:05:54.000Z2013-02-26T15:05:54.000ZJohn Inghamhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/JohnIngham

We sell large trees and hedges throughout the year but I have to face the fact that there are problems buying and selling in extreme weather like we have at present. There are obvious difficulties with transport but more subtle, long term problems with hardiness and survival of the more tender species. Last winter, which was tough for many people here in the UK, was even more extreme in parts of mainland Europe including countries where many of our plants are grown. How can we be sure that normally hardy plants which we buy and sell at this time of year will thrive. Basically I'm not sure we can and replacement of failed specimens appears to be the only answer.

Last year parts of the Netherlands had more extreme weather than we had in the UK with temperatures falling much lower. One result was that some evergreens such as laurels, bought widely for hedging and screening, appeared fine when delivered in early spring but several of them dropped their leaves soon after and appeared completely dead.

Customers buying these needed them replaced and we, and the nurseries who supplied them, were happy to arrange this. Of course we had to be satisfied the plant deaths were not the result of poor planting and aftercare. The landscapers who bought and planted these explained to their customers that they were bought in good faith and that it is not always possible to be sure from the appearance of plants bought after extreme weather that they are still thriving. Buying deciduous plants can also be difficult as trees and shrubs bought and planted in the winter may not show any obvious signs of death or distress until they fail to thrive in the spring.

I would be interested, as a plant supplier, to hear whether, and how, landscapers have coped with these problems after previous extreme weather.

John Ingham IMPACT PLANTS

Health and Wellbeing at Work eventhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/health-and-wellbeing-at-work-event2013-02-20T14:04:52.000Z2013-02-20T14:04:52.000ZLandscape Juicehttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/LandscapeJuice

About The Event
It is not only sports men and women who have the chance to shine at the Olympics, though. London 2012 looks set to be a fantastic showcase for UK industry, particularly when you consider that 98% of the contractors or suppliers involved with the Games are UK-based. The turf used in the main Olympic Park stadium has been supplied by Scunthorpe firm County Turf, and is sure to make a firm foundation for Olympic success. Royce Turf, the professional turf suppliers, are proud to be associated with one of the chosen Olympic contractors.

Here at Royce Turf, twenty two years of experience of providing turf has helped us to develop a comprehensive service, as well as a great reputation for being one of the leading local distributors of cultivated turf. Working exclusively with County Turf, we are able to provide the highest-quality turf for a range of environments, whether you are a commercial client looking to update your office grounds, or a homeowner completing a garden redesign.

For the Olympic stadium, County Turf have supplied a specialist blend of perennial rye grass, smooth stalk meadow grass and fescue grass seeds which will provide a hard-wearing pitch for a range of Olympic events. It required 360 rolls of this high-quality turf to cover a 9000 square-metre area, and when the last piece of turf was laid in March last year, the impressive effect of a County Turf surface was clear to see.

It is unlikely that your lawn will be the size of a sports stadium, but you will still be looking for the highest-quality turf to create a durable surface which will require minimal garden maintenance London We receive new deliveries of turf from County Turf every day, and our delivery service can have your turf on site within two to three days of your order. For a winning team of turf suppliers look no further than Royce Turf.

Disclaimer of Endorsement: Reference herein to any specific commercial products, process, or service by trade name, trademark, manufacturer, or otherwise, does not necessarily constitute or imply its endorsement, recommendation

Designer plans for cheaper gardenshttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/designer-plans-for-cheaper-gardens2011-10-09T15:03:30.000Z2011-10-09T15:03:30.000ZKeith Barkerhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/KeithBarker

East midlands garden design firm Lush Landscape & Garden Design have launched a brand new service, providing home owners with bespoke garden design plans at credit-crunch friendly prices.

"With the housing market uncertain and interest rates low, many homeowners are doing up, rather than selling up," explains Lush Landscape & Garden Design managing director Anna Barker. "As a result we've seen a large upturn in demand for garden plans this year."

"For this autumn/winter we decided to make local people a special offer they can't refuse. Our new fixed-price plans service allows customers to secure garden design and planting plans, designed specifically for their gardens, from as little as £200."

Once plans are created, home owners can build their gardens at their own pace and budget. With traditional garden design and build projects costing as much as a new kitchen or conservatory, the potential is there to save thousands of pounds.

"We've designed plan-only gardens for properties in Moira, Etwall, Duffield, Hilton and Packington so far this year, and we hope this offer will satisfy the increased demand," said Anna.

The fixed-price plans offer is running until the end of January 2012. We are equally capable of cutting a carefully manicured lawn and helping you with a regime of lawn treatments, lawn fertilizer applications and spring or autumn lawn scarifying to keep it at its very best or regularly cutting larger area of longer, rougher grass around commercial sites. We have a small fleet of different mowers to help us give the best possible finish, whatever the area.

For the majority of domestic and some 'premium' commercial lawns, we use roller mowers to leave a high quality, classically striped lawn. For other commercial contracts, for example pub beer gardens/restaurants and other small commercial lawns that we cut regularly, we use a mulching mower. This helps us provide a cost effective service as there are no lawn clippings to dispose of. This machine can be quickly converted to collect, as in the autumn or winter lawns may become covered with leaves, which cannot be mulched.

We also have ride on mowers suitable to collect, mulch or discharge clippings - offering a variety of options for our commercial clients and domestic customers who have a larger property.

But we don't just do grass cutting - we also carry out professional hedge trimming and hedge reductions too. Indeed many hedges have been proved to benefit from being cut regularly, we recommend twice yearly cuts to leylandii and beech hedges (dependent on the speed of growth). Regular cutting not only keeps the hedge under control but also promotes vigorous, healthy growth and prevent the hedge looking sparse and 'thin'.

Many customers are thankful of the fact that as part of our service package, we remove all green and garden waste from their properties, taking it for composting at Organic Recycling in Crowland. For more details on how they help us deal with our waste in an environmentally friendly way, see their website at: www.organicrecycling.co.uk

Our association with Organic Recycling also means that we can offer our customers their range of quality soil improvers, marketed under the name Bettaland Products. See www.bettaland.co.uk for details. We have achieved good results with these products in breaking up the heavy, clay soil which some areas of Spalding suffer with.

As we work a relatively small geographical area, we are able to provide a highly cost domestic garden and commercial grounds maintenance effective service, without compromising on quality. We offer regular services to all areas around Spalding, including Moulton, Weston, Pinchbeck (Including Pinchbeck West), Gosberton (including Clough and Risegate), Pode Hole, Spalding and others besides.

Fixed price services help you budget for the works, whilst we offer a choice of payment systems to help make payment simple. We accept cheques, cash, standing orders and BACS payment to suit your needs and operate 30 day payment system with our commercial clients.

Whatever your requirements, call us to arrange a free, no obligation quotation.

Phone: 07745 247488

Email: anpservicesspalding@yahoo.co.uk

Find us on the Internet: www.anpservicesspalding.com

Draft NPPF - An Opportunity for the Landscaping Industry to Stand Up and be Counted?https://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/draft-nppf-an-opportunity-for2011-07-26T10:00:00.000Z2011-07-26T10:00:00.000ZSustainable Land Managementhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/SustainableLandManagement

The long awaited draft National Planning Policy Framework was published yesterday and the consultation started:

http://www.communities.gov.uk/documents/planningandbuilding/pdf/1951811.pdf

It certainly has 'streamlined' planning guidance for the UK, and will quite rightly face severe criticism from the conservationists due to the heavily one sided approach in favour of development.

This then must mean it is good for the landscaping industry, particularly the larger businesses whose work is so intrinsically with the development and construction industry, and will by default help to 'boost' the industry as a whole. But the large majority of landscaping and horticultural businesses will not witness any 'boost' to the industry. We now know from experience that no matter how well the development and construction industries are doing, the landscaping industry is kept firmly in its new place - 'the poor cousin' ; accepting diminishing wages, presented with sites which fall well short of the 'minimum' standards in which to accomplish the landscape vision, which is usually so obviously nothing more than a blueprint from the cheapest landscape architectural firm whose vision is usually a sea of cotoneaster and hypericum.

However the word 'sustainable' takes an unprecedented dominance within NPPF, although the Brundtland definition of sustainable development has been somewhat abused. This does allow for the landscape industry to take the reins. But it cannot do so without entering its hat into the arena by way of replying to the consultation.

Can we sit back and leave up it to the imcumbent accreditation organisations, who have little choice but to follow the 'development is good' line. Nor can we assume that NGOs and other interest groups will speak up on behalf of the land based practitioner, when it is clear that 'big society' ideals are more about empowering those who often take the whole of the cake, leaving the landscapers the crumbs for which they have to habitually fight to get also.

Landscaping is the most 'SUSTAINABLE' angle of development. It may not be able to provide small scale energy saving devices but it does control all the other myriad of issues that are at play within the context of sustainability. The amount of knowledge and skills needed by landscapers in tidying up the mess left by the construction industry for the benefit of people, the community and biodiversity is immense, yet never considered by others. There is even now a general believe that landscapers simply provide the plants, which do the job themselves and should something go wrong the plants and landscaper are wrongly blamed when it usually the fact that the soil profile has been so destroyed, consolidated or polluted by the developers as to render any remediation by way of landscaping virtually impossible. But the landscaper perseveres and often achieves the impossible simply by way of working for nothing.

What is needed is a comprehensive look at 'sustainability' with the landscaping industry practitioners at the forefront of discussion. They provide a key to correct and workable sustainable solutions, the use of natural materials and tricks for maximising biodiversity. Landscape practitioners must not be sidelined in favour of an ever growing community of pseudo specialists, self made consultants et al, who simply do not have the knowledge or experience to tackle sustainable land management in what is always a site specific location.

Whatever will be thrown at the draft NPPF there is little doubt that the consultation will last its course and as such it is imperative that every organisation and landscaper needs to respond as they are one of the largest stakeholders involved. This is a real opportunity to change things in favour of the land management practitioner and lead them quickly back down the road towards joining other industries, with fair pay and influence, and possibly overtake them to become the standard bearers of sustainable good practice.

National Planning Policy Framework - What about our woods?!

The Fantasy of Sustainable Development

A memorial bench is the ideal tributehttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/a-memorial-bench-is-the-ideal2011-06-21T14:58:03.000Z2011-06-21T14:58:03.000Zchris nanglehttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/chrisnangle

A memorial bench is a commemorative seat that offers a simple yet effective means of commemorating a loved one.
