Matin d'hiver embrumé au Parc Botanique de Haute Bretagne by Alain Jouno

French photographer Alain Jouno has been named RHS Photographer of the Year for his evocative image of a foggy winter’s morning in the Parc Botanique de Haute Bretagne, Brittany, winning the top prize of £2,000 and a year’s RHS Gift membership.

Crow in flight by Catherine Sim

For her image of a crow in flight, 17-year-old Catherine Sim from Glasgow is named RHS Young Photographer of the Year and receives £500 to spend on the Wex Photographic website.

The judging panel, comprising Clive Nichols, Andrew Lawson and Chris Young, Editor of The Garden (RHS magazine) were unanimous in their decision, choosing the winning images from thousands of entries from around the world.

Chris Young commented: “Alain’s brilliant image is more than the sum of its parts. The serendipity of the sunrise, the abstract sculptural forms, the dogs drinking the water and the mist beyond create an incredibly evocative image. The formal rectilinear shape of the pond contrasts well with the different tree and shrub forms in the garden. We also enjoyed the contrast of the ripples of water emanating from the dogs, and the shape those ripples created in the overall image. This is a well-composed photograph that truly reflects a moment in a garden’s time.”

Speaking about his achievement, Alain said: “It is a great honour to be crowned RHS Photographer of the Year 2014. It’s hard to believe I have won, because I am only a modest amateur photographer. I entered the competition to share the beauty of the Botanical Park of Haute Bretagne. I took this image one morning as the mist was rising and the sky was lit by the setting sun.”

The judges were particularly impressed by the extraordinary quality of images submitted by the budding young photographers under 18, with entries rivalling those in the adult categories, making it very difficult to choose a winner.

About Catherine’s winning image, Chris said: “Some images are evocative; some are artistic; and some stop you in your tracks. This image does all three. It is a beautifully captured moment, using the rule of thirds to strong effect. The balance between the black of the crow contrasting with the whites/greys of the sky and fence adds strong drama and contrast to this photograph. The slight curves to the wing tips also bring in movement and pace. It is a really super photograph.”

On receiving the award, Catherine said: “I spend a lot of my time taking photographs outdoors and when I saw last year’s entries I was inspired to enter the competition. I am very honoured to win such a prestigious award; it is a fantastic achievement for me. I am so passionate about photography, and getting recognition for something that I love doing is so rewarding and makes all those hours trying to get the perfect shot so worthwhile. It is definitely the highlight of my year. I am very proud of myself, and to have this achievement on my CV will hopefully help me to pursue my love of photography as a career in the future.”

The competition was open both to professional and amateur photographers, who were invited to submit images to any of the five adult categories – Plants, Abstracts and Details, Seasons, Celebrating Gardens, and Wildlife – or the two categories specifically for under-18s. The RHS Photographer of the Year, Alain Jouno and the RHS Young Photographer of the Year, Catherine Sim, were selected from the winning images from each of these categories for their overall artistry, creativity and technical excellence.

The Starsoil, which is the latest soil tiller and stone crusher, certainly lived up to its name and Lamberhurst Engineering, the UK distributor is expecting an influx of orders.

Contractors in the forestry industry eagerly looked upon the 2 speed gearbox machine which has an extended range of functions as well as impressive versatility.
Suitable for tractors, with a power class between 150 and 250 HP, the Starsoil is equipped with a new traction system that simplifies work by ensuring greater efficiency. Amongst these are soil-tiling to a depth of 40 cm, crushing stones with a min. diameter of 30 cm and mulching wood with a diameter of 40 cm.

The two speed gearbox enables a reduction from 1000rpm to 540rpm while maintaining the speed of the PTO of the tractor at 100rpm. Therefore, this feature results in higher torque and better processing during both mulching wood (fast pace) and milling rocks and soil (slow pace).

The roller has seen an improvement in comparison to its predecessor, which now has a larger diameter and more toothed rings enabling soil to be penetrated more easily. With a reinforced bearing durability has been upgraded and the new roller scraper allows for the removal of soil residue.

The core features remain unchanged but a further advantage can be found in the form of an integrated cooling system. The cooling function can easily be activated from the tractor cab using the control device and the temperature can be controlled constantly through the display which eliminates the risk of transmission overheating. The parallel gear transmission offers reduced width and smaller footprint.

Other features include:

• The frame is covered with replaceable anti-wear plates made of Hardox ®
• New generation patented rotor with efficient tool combination of the new type, "MONO PROTECT™ and" MONO EXTREM ™ with additional tungsten carbide inserts at points most subject to wear
• High performance with minimum energy consumption thanks to its lightweight construction (2500 - 3500 kg)
• Hydraulically adjustable hood and compacting roller
• Adjustable crushing bar and grill to obtain the desired degree of crushing
• Three-point ISO linkage of 3rd category
• The innovative ADAM™ cardan alignment system is available on request, to improve the adaptation of the machine to the soil. This feature of "angular compensation" is used to protect the cardan shaft and the tractor PTO from unnecessary stress caused by differences in soil.
• Hydraulic compacting roller (can also be used as guard frame) or grading blade available according to choice
• Work widths available - 175, 200, 225, 250 cm
The complete range of Seppi products is on sale in the UK exclusively from Lamberhurst Engineering.

For more information, please contact 01892 890 364 or visit the website on www.lameng.com. Cutting and collecting is directly comparable to the petrol version. An optional power converter is also available to power any 220V electric tool below 1000W.

The VTE model of the Bahia electric family is a true multifunctional vehicle that is compact, silent and environmentally-friendly. It offers a professional and original solution for all of your maintenance, work and transport needs throughout the year. It is ideal for movement, towing and working in enclosed spaces where compactness, manoeuvrability, low noise and absence of pollutant emissions are important.

The wheel barrow is a new revolutionary 100% electric wheel barrow, which is available with a range of attachments to tackle a wide variety of jobs. Power comes from a 24V 1000W battery with two forward and two reverse speeds up to 6kp/h which can transport heavy material in the skip section and water or liquid material in the tank section, be used as a raised work bench by folding down the side panels, or transport tools in the tool rack and be used to tip waste material.

The range of four robotic ETmowers, which are available in 44cm, 65cm and 105cm cutting widths cut from 5,000m² up to 20,000m². Robot mowers mow grass areas perfectly without any human intervention and reduce the cost of lawn maintenance considerably, not only in terms of labour and maintenance costs, but also by cutting your energy bill. Mulch mowing is 100% natural: it does away with the need to gather up, store and dispose of the cuttings, it fertilises the soil, and it helps the lawn to stand up to drought conditions.

Pellenc tools can now be seen in every major UK city, as well as the majority of national trust sites around the country. “Most councils and contractors are looking more closely at the lifetime cost of their machinery and not just the initial purchasing cost. Our product is not the cheapest to buy, but if you consider lifetime cost, repairs, maintenance and downtime, the value is there for all to see".

In the last five years, Pellenc has gained market recognition by offering a unique range of ‘zero emission’ battery-powered handheld tools, thanks to the development of Lithium-ion ultra-high performance batteries. This technology, which is exclusive to Pellenc, allows for a drastic reduction in the production of greenhouse gases and noise pollution. It is also comfortable for users, meets new sustainable development demands and offers excellent economic profitability. All tools now come with a comprehensive three year warranty.

A range of petrol and diesel Etesia pedestrian and ride-on machines can also be seen by visiting RT Machinery, an Etesia approved dealer, on stand D45.

For further information, please contact Etesia UK on 01295 680120 or visit www.etesia.co.uk

For more news, reviews and insightful views, you can follow Etesia UK on Twitter @EtesiaUK and like the company’s Facebook page – www.facebook.com/EtesiaUK. Patrick was followed by Alistair Hollis, operational services manager for Bowls England who gave an update of the national governing body.

Next up was Mike Williamson of Sherriff Amenity who gave a technical presentation on seed and fertiliser including the correct formulations to use at different times of the year.

The morning session was concluded by Chris Sherriff, a bowling green contractor who gave his thoughts on the problems he had suffered during a thoroughly wet winter and how he has overcome them to get the greens ready for the start of the season.

After lunch, everyone went outside in the sunshine for a demonstration of a wide range of Dennis and SISIS turf maintenance machinery by the company’s field support team which included spikers, scarifiers and a range of mowers.

The day was brought to a close with the now infamous 'Turf Clinic' - a question and answer session, which proved to be quite lively with delegates getting the chance to ask the experts questions which they had about their greens.

Arthur Lindsey, the greenkeeper from Potton Bowls Club commented: “I was very happy to have the Dennis and SISIS seminar here at the club. The demonstration of all the machinery has given us a chance to see the latest turf maintenance equipment, whilst the presentations have been very interesting. The day has gone very well, the weather has been great and everyone has learnt something from being here.”

Roger Moore, customer manager at Dennis and SISIS, said "The aim of these seminars is to give groups of greenkeepers the latest information about how they can improve their playing surfaces. We’ve already had some positive feedback from attendees, who said they found the day very informative and interesting, which is pleasing to know that we have got the correct mix of technical presentations and also machinery demonstrations. We will shortly be announcing other seminars across various geographical locations in due course.”

For more news, reviews and insightful views, you can follow Dennis on Twitter @DennisMowers and SISIS @SISISMachinery. The affirmation of Superbrand status follows the latest assessment of the annual survey, which has been identifying the UK’s strongest business-to-business brands since 2001.

The yearly process, managed by TCBA, surveys an expert Council and over 2,000 individual business professionals from across the UK. Both audiences rate over 1,200 brands, which they assess on the three key criteria of quality, reliability and distinction.

Marshalls is the UK’s market-leading supplier of hard landscaping products to both the domestic and commercial markets. Following international expansion Marshalls now has a presence in Northern Europe, Asia and North America. Marshalls recently announced a three year partnership with Unicef UK which aims to eradicate child labour from the quarrying sector in India.

Stephen Cheliotis, Chairman of the Business Superbrands Council said: “For Marshalls to achieve Business Superbrand status is really positive, especially considering over one thousand brands were evaluated in the process. Business Superbrand status is affirmation of the goodwill and positive reputation Marshalls enjoys within the UK among both marketing experts and business professionals alike. Achieving Business Superbrand status places the brand among an elite of companies, whose brand equity is helping to drive their business forward”.

Chris Harrop, Marshalls Group Marketing Director, said: “Marshalls is extremely proud to be awarded Superbrand status for our fifth year in a row. At Marshalls we work hard to maintain the strength of our brand by placing a constant focus on the quality of our products, services and the needs of our customers and we continue to lead the market through innovation and excellence.”

There are now three awards of £2,000 each will be given to designers who submit the best plans for a show garden to be created at Gardening Scotland 2014.

The awards have been developed in order to encourage designers to create exhibits that reflect real gardens.

Martin Dare, Gardening Scotland show organiser, said: “Feedback from visitors has shown that what they want to see are not fantasy gardens but an enhanced version of what they have got at home. They want show gardens to be inspirational and aspirational and they want them to be filled with plants.”

Garden designers, students from Scotland’s rural colleges and representatives of major charities were amongst the audience who attended the Forum at Oatridge College near Broxburn.

The speakers were horticultural lecturers Ann Burns of Oatridge and Ally Bruce of Dundee College as well as Dougal Philip and Lesley Watson of New Hopetoun Gardens Garden Centre, all of whom have experience of creating successful show gardens.

Dougal Philip, who is also Chairman of The Cross Trust said: “ The Trust is a charitable body which gives grants to young Scots who are of merit and in financial need in order to extend the boundaries of their knowledge of human life. The Trust administers the annual John Fife Travel Award for young people of Scottish birth or parentage who are either studying or working in horticulture.

“We are delighted to be supporting Gardening Scotland in The Artisan Garden Design Competition as we believe it has the potential to give young designers a real platform for their work.”

Gardening Scotland 2014 will take place from Friday, 30 May until Sunday, 2 June at The Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh.

The organisers of Gardening Scotland are calling on the landscape industry in Scotland to take full advantage of the opportunity offered by the country's only national horticultural event as a place to showcase their talents to the public.

Thirty five thousand people visit the show every year and organiser Martin Dare says it provides the perfect shop window for garden designers and landscaping companies to engage with potential customers.

Now, in an attempt to entice new designers to become involved and to encourage previous participants to create even better exhibits than before, Gardening Scotland is offering a £2,000 incentive for the most outstanding plan for a show garden.

The winning design will be chosen by a panel of leading industry figures whose criteria will be to find a show garden that makes excellent use of plants and which will also appeal to the public.

And as well as offering the award, Gardening Scotland is also running a Show Garden Design Forum on Thursday, 28 November at Oatridge College near Broxburn.

Taking part will be Dougal Philip and Lesley Watson of New Hopetoun Gardens, Ann Burns of Oatridge College and Ally Bruce of Dundee College, who have all created award winning show gardens at Gardening Scotland.

Martin Dare says: "We want to impress upon designers the benefits of doing a show garden at Gardening Scotland. We know from those who have done it successfully in the past that it can result in lucrative commissions and long-term work and so we want to create the right conditions that will encourage high quality show gardens at Gardening Scotland 2014 and beyond."

Meanwhile tickets to Gardening Scotland 2014 will go on sale from 1 November following last year's successful early ticket launch aimed at achieving pre-Christmas sales.

Gardening Scotland is Scotland’s national gardening and outdoor living show. In 2014 it will take place from Friday, 30 May until Sunday, 1 June at The Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh.
