what would you do?

On 20/07/09, after weeks of preparation in order to win the project, we commence works, the CAT scan, excavators etc arrive at 8.00am. Apart from the weather all the dates of products are ordered to a scheduled plan. The finished project is stunning, only viewed at present in my minds eye and a few sheets of inked paper, in 10 weeks time i'll upload to LJ, all sounds great guns doesn't it? It did up until 5.00pm yesterday when my client casually dropped the "My 6 year old has swine flu".I came home to look for another opinion, Ive since tried to make contact via telephone and email to no avail, I'm not trying to stall the project by any form, as this will send out a ripple to others waiting and we don't want that now.Our leaders have made some kind of questimate that many of us will catch this foreign body, OK so I might do as my family too, but I cant waltz straight into area which is deemed ....."unhealthy" . No offence with the latter word, could'nt think of another.what would you do?

    Hi,

I'm rather sceptical about swine flu and its risks. However unfortunately in these days of 'blame and claim' and with your statutory obligations regarting duty of care to employees and sub contractors, I'd put the job back a fortnight as I believe, from what I've read, by then the poor child should hopefully be over it.

  • I would put off till they are no longer contagious, as you say you don't want to risk spreading the virus, it could lay you low for ages.
  • Really topical this one for me as I was to travel back to Cornwall to work for a bit on a quay with family in tow. Only just found out my niece has swine flu and as my 5 year old has a bad history with regards fevers, (he has had febrile convulsions which are absolutely terrifying), we have just made the decision for my family to stay put. Swine flu seems to have been contained quite well here and certainly, although I hate to say it, the press here has been very critical of the UK's handling of swine handling, which does appear to have been somewhat flippant to say the least and when you have a family member in the risk category then there is a whole new prospective on the virus.
This does raise the additional issues of illness and self employment and with most of the rest of my immediate family being in public industry, they have never understood why I am so agitated when a bug is doing the rounds in my family - it costs us a lot of money.
  • Tough call!

Personally I would forget the doomsday predictions that have been branded about.

We have quite a major outbreak in this area, in fact most of my family have caught the flu with two confirmed cases of swine flu. To be honest it appears that you recover quicker from swine flu than the normal seasonal flu!

I believe that if you are healthy and without any underlining medical conditions you would be fairly safe. However you do have a responsibility to your family and staff.

If it was me, I would advise my staff that the clients young child has swine flu and give them the choice to work on the site or not particularly if they have any health issues. Limit the possibility of human to human contact with the client and his / her family at least for the first week.

However perhaps the best thing to do would be to try contacting the NHS Direct call centre for their advice.
  • I predominantley agree with graeme and stuart ?

for what reason did he tell you the 'facts'? if deposit taken i guess he is not trying to make excuses.

was it mentioned in general chit-chat conversation? what does he want you to do? be pOsItIvE
  • I have been thinking what would I do if in your shoes Kerry.

If you delayed the start by a week, what to say that their other child or the parents then catch it. Delay it again for another week?
What if you catch it after delaying the start of the job? You could be putting off this job and every other one for weeks if not months.

I would just do it as scheduled and limit any contact where ever possible. If you listen to the Gov. we are all likely to catch it at some point, might as well be sooner than later before the strain gets more powerful :-(
  • I may have been sucked in a little by the media circus, after a little research I've learnt that there where 55,000 new cases in the UK last week. After all i wouldn't knowingly walk into any unsafe situations, its different if you don't know.

Ive tried contacting NHS direct, they're too busy with SW cases to speak to any non emergency cases, what I'm trying to clarify is whether those unfortunate folk that have caught it have to remain isolated from those that havent and if so how long.

I cant start another project as the others are too lengthy in time scale, to flit from one project to another would be unfair on my clients and it would also compromise the service they deserve and I cant be doing with setting up camp on another project knowing the previous is unfinished.

A deposit has been taken and Ive been fully paid for all materials, whilst at Jewsons on Saturday the yard lads were loading the lorries for my first drop in the morning, I don't believe that by cancelling the deliveries will have some form of effect with any future deliveries as I'm sure Jewsons would want me to take my clients money else where, its just a pain in the arse all round really.

Contacting clients is second nature, I have a few one liners with in my company, one of them being "Its better to make contact than be contacted"

OK so Ive made up my mind, I'll push the project back by a week, the lads have a choice to deliver flyer's for the first half of the week, then work in my house for the remainder, or find there own way for such time.

thanks for your replies people, have yourselves a good week.
  • as I'm sure Jewsons would NOT want me to ..............................ooopppps
