Weed Killing - Certification??

Afternoon folks.

I have had a request from a customer to spray their block paving area with weed killer. I use Gallup 360 on my own property with good results so thinking may try this. My question is do i need any certification to use Gallup 360 on a customers property??

It is not just 'certification', it is a full H&S do's and don'ts, awareness of problems, calibration, calculation of dose, spray technique and disposal of excess and washings etc.

Don't leave home with out them!

Also you need to know the legislation regarding the use of herbicides on 'impermeable surfaces' that is to say standard block paving.

Spot spraying/targeted spraying of weeds is OK, blanket spraying of the whole area 'just in case' or 'because its easier' is a BIG no-no.

Would strongly suggest and please don't take offence at this that if you don't have the legally required training and certification you shouldn't undertake any weed killing tasks until you do.

  • Absolutely must have the certification and the right PPE as well. I see so many contractors spraying without wearing appropriate PPE and carrying out the spraying in unsuitable conditions....

    In a nut shell yes!

If you spray anything commercially you need a minimum of PA1 and PA6. This is not 'elf and safety gone mad' there are a huge number of rules to protect you and others around you so you will need certification.

Yes you need a least a Pa1 and pa6. I have recently just done mine along with a load of other pa certificates and it's definitely worth it. You learn alot but most importantly your not causing damage to the environment and your protecting yourself too.

Very clear folks. Thanks to everyone for responses
  • This might sound like a stupid question, but....How does this work if if you intend to feed a customer's lawn with just general over the counter feed such as miracle grow for example. Are we allowed to do this without a licence?

Pesticide spraying is regulated the moment, simple fertiliser spraying is not - however always best to check the labels for warning symbols; hazardous, irritant, etc as this will affect your risk assessment and approach to the job.

as a side note, in general, if you are applying ferts (and other products) for customers in any reasonable quantity then professional size packs and grades will be cheaper in the long run and offer better profit margins.
