I pay up to a grand for AVIVA for my little van. Its all bells and whistles and I thought I need it.

first they said I had no no claims record for a van hence the price. My 10 plus years on my car do not count.

Once I had my first year under the belt the rates went up because of the area? But I had no accident at all. Nada issues.

Then they said it was because I have my son on it because of his age 25 years old, but he drives the same type of van from his employer since many years (gasman), so has more experience than me and has had no accidents in his car either.

My problem is I cannot use the comparisons websites because the previous owner of my van changed the registration and the websites cannot recognise it and think its a car. So no quotes for me. Plus its automatic and the engine "special" as it cannot be found on the comparisons sites either. When calling insurers direct they faff about and cannot find it either. It clearly exists as I pay my road tax and got it registered in my name without problems.

It irks me when I hear people who are driving larger vans than me pay only £300 to £500 including indemnity and tools cover.

Anyone can recommend a van insurance broker as I am tired paying around £90 per month?

  • Hi Daniela,

Try Commercial Vehicle Direct. They have been great for me, other than their really boring and almost aggressive contact at renewal time. Calls, texts, emails, letters, all for weeks in advance and the calls and texts can be several times a day.

One tip is to do the shopping around and go back with the best deal to all insurers. They often match it, makes you realise how many people are being ripped off!

    • Thanks!

Problem is the few sites that give a quote are worse than AVIVA, so no incentive for them to match. In my case I think I need a broker with a more a hands on approach. ;-)

      But I will try them.

  • Wow I wish mine was £90 a month. £134 each month for me! NFU was by far the cheapest with almost no charge for paying monthly. A lot of insurers have high rates when paying monthly!

I've been with Performance Direct for years now. Never changed from them but always get comparison quotes and they always come up trumps for me. Had fleet insurance with them now for the last 2-3 years, insuring a Luton VW, Transit Tipper pickup and two 4x4's and my personal car on a any driver over 30 and a named young driver, aged 19. £600 per vehicle per year full comp.....not bad in my opinion
  • Does seem a bit pricey......... I use Directline at £207 for the year.....Transit Connect van but with full noclaims discount. Perhaps the premium would drop significantly if you didn't include toolcover?...... I know a lot of us take the expensive Stihl etc stuff out the vans at night when most thieves appear to strike.

    • I have no tool cover with the van insurance but separate. Its just van insurance. Full comp, 2 years no claims, legal cover, basic breakdown cover, uninsured cover and replacement van in case the worst happens.

That does seem expensive, I'm 21, had my licence for 4 years, 3 years no claims. On a Mercedes sprinter I now pay £700 for the year. I also insured my Saab on business insurance, with 1 years no claims and paid £450
    • Yeah, I am twice your age and some. LOL I should only be paying around £350 a year.

My son looked online and he could get insurance for a ford transit van for £700 and he is 26. I will check them all out that were mentioned.

  • Gonna hit the phones on Wednesday and call a few companies.

I would recommend either, Zenith insurance or  Hastings, been with them both and had no problems. The price i mentioned above were from both those insurance companies!
