Tips of the Day

We've got a 'Today" thread, a "Quote of the Day" thread and now an "FAQ", but how about 'Tips of the Day' thread ? There are always tips, workarounds to everyday, common problems that just make the task, job or day go that little bit easier. Maybe you've found a great way to save time ? Whether they are 'organisational' or 'practical' - How about sharing it with LJNers ?

First one I can think of:

Hayter Mowers - mainly non-pro models. The handles are not particularly strong and the bolt that joins the two parts of the hand often goes missing - typically on site in the middle of a jon.
Keep 25-35mm terry/hose clips in the van and use to clamp both parts of handle together. Also makes the handle much stronger when going up/down kerbs etc. Also cheaper than Hayter spares..
  • Might be stating the bleedin' obvious here but... when filling your black bin bag with grass clippings and other waste, put it in a dustbin. The number of people I see struggling to hold the floppy bag open with one hand whilst using the other to try and empty grass boxes etc is amazing. You can really fill the bag up this way too.

Keep two two rebar fencing pins in the van and use to 'hold' open large 1000l jumbo bags for single handed loading of green waste. I used to hate struggling to get the bl**dy stuff in on my own.

Always leave a hot two-stroke engine running on idle for 20-30 seconds to re-coat the piston with oil, before turning it off.

Always use a strimmer with the cutting tips of the nylon rotating in an ant-clockwise direction so that the excess of debris is directed away from areas - such as pathways, terraces, windows and ponds etc - that you need to protect.
  • When going out with the lads make sure you get up with the men.
  • Why worry you, surely some on here have had an experience of their staff failing to show on an occasion, thats what I was aiming at.

    Tongue in cheek really.

I have many regrets about ignoring my gut but none for ignoring my brain.

Collecting up leaves (nicked this from my earlier post):

Get two Rebar fencing pins, 15-20 foot of green scaffolding neting (or similar), string the neting between the 2 pins with some slack, maybe a couple of tent pegs along the bottom of the net and set up like a football 'goal'. We then just blow with back pack blowers into the 'goal'. When done, just roll it up and chuck it on the vehicle. Really don't even then have to ever handle leaves. Only works if you have a large open area (having said that I've never tried in small gardens..)
