Spring Statement 2018 : Diesel Van VED Changes

Subject to confirmation, I heard in today's Spring Statement by the Chancellor, that a consultation is planned and likely means Diesel Vans will incur a VED supplement for those registered prior to Apil 2017, effectively pushing a Van into the next higher category.....

This is being seen as an 'incentive' for owners to move towards newer, cleaner or alternative technogoly based vans.

Interested to see the details in financial papers etc overnight along with other changes relevant to SME's

Are there any cleaner cost effective alternatives to the diesel van ?

    • PRO

You spotted the flaw in their 'incentive' ;)

From my memory, most petrol engined vans 'disappeared' when Government pushed us all towards the 'cleaner' DERV vans. Clearly no Hybrid or EV are on the horizion, unless you cover a very restricted geo-area...

I wonder how quickly we'll see them re-introduced......?

Ive been looking for a van for 12 months and i just cant commit the money to such a confused situation right now.

There is no alternative and why do i want to get hammered by the unjust penalties they are likely to introduce at the same time the diesil vehicles arent depriciating in tune with the penalties.

Its all madness and financially un incentivising

Short term, like many, the only solutions I can see is purchase previously owned vehicles or contract hire vans and run them thru to scrappage or end of contract (but you’re still at the mercy of VED changes and emission zones)

The current depreciation hit on new diesel vehicles is huge and has already affectted their sales figures....

Will be interesting to see what official scrappage scheme becomes available.

Sounds like an easy way for the government to make some money to me. How many vans will that hit. Pre 2017 must be most of the diesel vans on the road.

Who wants to buy a new diesel van in the current climate when we all know they are going to hit them hard in the coming years and try to drive them off the roads.

I have looked at alternatives for some time now. I need a transit/transporter type van that can carry a tonne and pull a  loaded trailer.

Absolutely no petrol options at all and to buy a big enough van to pull the weight i need costs £60k plus and yes you read that right!!

I want to be green and understand the issues of diesel but i want to make some profit too and the current choices and costs available just don't make sense to traders like me involved in the construction game.

In time i am sure the tech and the situation will improve but it really gets up my nose how the government are going to implement all these disincentives way before the viable solutions have been rolled out.

Sorry - i didn't make clear in the above post that i was talking about electric alternatives.
