Like most self employed people, sometimes I feel that I work all hours that god sent. However, I do like some time off in the evening so have started switching my mobile off after 7.30 (my business line diverts to it before we start the discussion about whether a mobile number is the domain of cowboys).Another reason is I'm not in my best mood when a customer rings up at 10.15 on a Sunday night to ask if I could prune their wysteria (which has happened before).I was wondering what time , if any, you 'pull the shutters down' on your business ?

  • I don't bother just let it ring if its someone I don't want to talk to. My land line n mob are personal lines too.
  • I never turn off for the evening.

In this economic climate if the phone rings and its a potential job, I wouldn't even object to being woken up whilst in bed!

    24, 7, 365 as the song goes......
  • Mobile on to about 11PM unless covering emergency call outs then 24X7 - Would only answer after 9PM if it was a known number else to voicemail then quickly check (sad I know!)
  • Same here! Although since landline is diverted to mobile I keep my mobile on 24/7 incase of family emergencies etc

Also Sunday's are a no-no too; that's purely family and peep time...I'll answer most likely but I'll just tell them to phone back the next day...politely of course!

  • Answering machine screens all calls after 6.30pm.

Don't get me started on Yellow Pages. I opted out because the only people that called me re Yellow Pages were Yellow Pages, yet I still get them calling trying to flog me advertising and an entry on Yell.com.

  • I have a different situation as I do the school run in the afternoon, - so won't answer the phone from 3.30 - 7.30, (wouldnt' be good for business to have a 5 yr old in the background), I then do take phone calls happily in the evening up to about 10.30, - but won't answer calls on a Sunday, - if people are serious about using you, - not just on getting their job done immediately, they will wait, - and it makes them better customers if you know that they can wait 24 hours for a reply.
  • This is interesting because it makes me see that I don't really work in a conversational business - everything is communicated via email - I get about 50 emails a day (lots of junk like newsletters from consultancies and the EU) and probably only 2 or 3 phone calls a day. It's probably because email gives you 'evidence' that you've done something or tried to do something - sad that we're constantly on point to play the 'blame game'. Blackberry is on 24/7 and checked regularly during waking hours, remote accessing laptop is normally with me at home in the evening and on the weekend - just in case I need to do anything more complicated than reply to a simple email. But I'm a slave to the Blackberry - it's my alarm clock, my mobile phone and my ever-open portal to the office 24/7/365....
  • They are the worst offenders for nuisance calls and their sales pitch is basically "Talk and don't let the customer get a word in then try and squeeze their Direct Debit details out regardless".

Tey quickly get me hanging up on them!
