  If you check their website it offers you the option to see if something is in stock before you travel, or to get it sent if it's not in stock locally. It also shows more than one store, so if it's not available in your local store it will show you the next nearest etc.

  Argos operate a similar system, and the number of times I've come out of Argos because an item is not in stock....

  All I would say about Screwfix is that if you are lucky enough to live somewhere with an agricultural store nearby they are often cheaper, and for hand tools etc other sites can be a lot cheaper (even try Amazon for some things!). Mail order is nearly always very good, but does rely on you having somewhere where things can be delivered- not handy if you have lots of customers and you're not in one place all day!

  Maybe this is why a lot of us go to the local agricultural merchant.  They've got what's on show, pay a bit more, but hopefully no time wasted - apart from a good chat with the guys you get to know + you'll get the occasional job recommendation +a mint part exchange mower may come you way now and then.  Building relationships - priceless!

  Large Screwfix stores carry 14,000 lines out of 18,000 in the Catalogue, smaller stores carry 10,000 out of 18,000, if it's not a stock item it can be ordered in from the main warehouse overnight for 12 noon next day or delivered to you at home or on site. The large stores get a daily replenishment every day the smaller ones twice a week. Ben is quite correct with a little investigation first you can get what you want when you want it. Oh and I would like to see a local agricultural merchant open 7 days a week up to 8pm at night.

  I would also like to see my local agricultural merchant open on Sundays, but mine does at least make some effort, 8-am until 6pm for six days a week isn't too bad for an independant; I just need to be better organised!

  andover store carry 900 out of 18000 products, there is a lot of tradesmen around my area and 900 out of 18000 just isnt enough, its just like evry thing else around andover, you have to travel out of the area to get a good price, example project packs of indian stone anywhere in andover 15 square metres would over £400.      a 17 square metre pack at (dean & tranter stone) in fordingbridge 28 miles away £309. when collecting 4 packs at a time think of that saving, same with fencing materials, ANDOVER has some kind of thing going on where they all fix there own prices, but i run a bussines and will try to get my materials as cheap as poss but they all need to be top quality.

  whats the problem with the boots then, never had them before but they did look light and flexi, what would you recomend then, got to be slip on, not rigger boots

  Screwix...waste of time!? Are you kidding me? I placed an order this afternoon (on a Sunday) and got an email an hour later telling me it had been dispatched already! Also, most mainland companies charge a fortune to deliver stuff over to Northern Ireland, Screwfix delivers it for FREE if its over £50, and whatever courier they use has the sense to leave the parcel round the back of the house instead of sending it back to the warehouse just because no one is in to sign for it. They are an excellent company in my opinion.

  Same to be fair I ordered a Drill on Thursday and it was delivered to the site I was working at Friday at 9:30 - free delivery. I cant comment on the shops as Ive only ever used the delivery service.

  Hi Phil, i understand your frustration at them not having what you want in stock when you have gone to the trouble of traveling to the store and building up your expectations. I've been there, done that and bought (or maybe not) the t shirt.

  I have non of these problems anymore as i buy as much as i can off ebay in the evenings which then gets delivered without any hassle.

  Not sure about slip on boots as i have never tried them, are you referring to the 'dealer' type boots ?

  Don't like dewalt lace ups, favorites at the moment are uvex with the rubber toe protectors so you don't get two holes worn on the ends of your boots.
