Remembering gardeners who gave and continue to give

I get very emotional on remembrance Sunday. It is never lost on me that so many young men and women gave their lives so that I might have the freedom to live the way I do. I grew up in a garrison town and I was born just twenty years after the Second World War. As a boy and young man I cried at the memorial to the fallen heroes who left my local villages of Whitehill, Bordon and Blackmoor. There are so many gardeners who are employed to maintain British war graves around the world and they would have worked hard to present their cemeteries for this important day. There were also so many gardeners who left service and joined the war effort, never to return - Rudyard Kipling's son John was one of them - Kipling help form the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. War Graves Commission remembers gardening heroes The Gardener - If any ask us why we died Tell them 'Because our fathers lied' When do you think that he'll come back?

  • Not wishing to get into the rights and wrongs of the current and previous wars but I have nothing but respect for the current, retired and fallen members of the armed services. My family have a fairly long miltary background and I know the pains they suffered.

What really got me was when visiting the Lost Gardens of Heligan the number of gardeners who went to war and never returned. I am sure a lot of the big estates during the second world war lost so many.
