Lawn been glyphosated......

One for the lawn exoerts.A customer's neighbour sprayed weed killer on her dandelions on her lawn using RoundUp. She asked me if there is anything I can do. I have suggested that I cut the lawn and vigourously scarify the lawn paying particular attention to the patches of dead grass. I would then scatter some grass seeds over the lawn and then roll in it. I plan to do this this week.Am I on the right lines here?

  • that's about right but I would not roll it  maybe get some sandy topsoil to sprinkle over the seed and try and get seed to match the rest of the lawn

I had a customer do the same. I just popped some seed down on the spots. The dead grass protected the seed long enough for the new grass to germinate. Was about 6 weeks until it looked ok again though.

Ideally dead areas should be raked out and foliage removed as glyphosate can linger on the leaves for a while afterwards. Grade A job would be scarify hard and lightly overseed the entire lawn with more on the dead patches as its often difficult to match grass cultivars so it all blends,  but otherwise you could just do the patches. I was told or I might have read it here....a good seed bed should be firm enough to ride a bicycle on but soft enough to leave a shallow imprint ! Make sure seed has good contact with the soil - fine watering should do that.

    • Thanks PWC.
    • A road bike or a fat tyre mountain bike?!

650b is the sweet spot ;-)
        • It's a seed bed, if you're not riding across it with niche 29er fat tyres on a fixie whilst wearing tweed, sandals and a moustache, you're not trying hard enough
