Last visits of the year!!

Can the guys on here who are mainly into the maintenance side of things tell me how you can be doing your last visits of the year?, when the leaves have nowhere near finished falling,

Also, people are saying they have finished cutting!, well if you are still maintaining the garden, must be a nightmare getting the leaves up if not mowing, even if its on high setting it takes very little off gives a nice finish and picks the leaves up, si.mples

I was having a drink after golf on sunday with 2 fellow maintenance guys, and they too were at a loss to understand this.

Is it because you dont want to go in the winter or because the clients dont want you to go?,

In my local area (within 5 miles) I know about a dozen guys who have all been in business for at least 10 years each, 2 of them 30 years each!, and not one of them eases up during the winter,

I know not everyone does things the same, but they do seem to around here,....am I missing something.

  • No rest for me - I work all year round as there is always plenty to be done in the garden in winter. By the time all the clearing up from this year and the getting ready for next is done, along with all those "little jobs" youve never got time the rest of the year, it's spring and off we go again. If anyone tries to tell you that there's nothing that can be done in the winter months, then chances are their garden doesn't look half as good as it should.
  • Nowhere near last visits at the moment! Still mowing happily here in Sussex, and as for leaves, well don't get me started! I generally find the last week before Christmas almost grinds to a halt, and I am expecting to take the week after Christmas off, and some of my jobs will be every two or three or even four weeks in January, possibly February, but after that back on normal weekly/fortnightly run.
  • I've suddenly got very busy and reg maintenance too unless they cancel, Would I be expecting and mad rush to get garden tidy for xmas I don't know my first full year, will be interesting I was quiet in the summer, do you mainly pick up your regulars in the Autumn?
  • I pick up new ones all year round Miranda, although April and May are usuall quite good for new clients,
I'm fortunate to be in the position where I can take ot leave new jobs, i only really want the cream as I have an almost full diary.
As its your first year Miranda if you were to ask my advice I would tell you to tell any future clients that you only offer an all year round service, it says this on my business cards, if you set your stall out from day one, then in the long term you will have a diary that is full of bread and butter clients, no advertising, ever.

  • Some of my clients are lawn cuts only, and it would be stupid to turn up mid november to work and charge them for it when nothing gets taken off the lawn. Common sense. My clients who want lawns plus maintenance stay on, some go to 4-weekly. My commercial work continues as normal, less frequent visits but monthly invoices remain the same year-round.

I have been dying for my hectic schedule to quieten down a bit and now I'm there I'm loving it. Still got plenty coming in each month to live, run the business and save so why not enjoy the free time?

And not all lawns are near trees to be affected by leaf-fall. Many of mine aren't.
  • The grass In yorkshire seems to have stopped growing now, but even come monday just gone many needed a cut.
Alot of the less aware customers think 1st october and thats it, these have been educated, and those who are adamant their garden needs no work between Oct and May will not be continued next year.
Grass cuts only are now over, bar a couple of aerations, but most gardens still have leaf clearance, hedging and border work left to do ready for winter.
