Honda Mowers - Wheels locking on pullback

My love/hate relationship continues with Honda

So ... the ongoing problem has got worse now. The rear drive wheels on my my Honda mower (self propelled) that used to intermittently locked on pull back have now locked solid when pulling back. Going forward is no problem.Having researched this it seems a common problem. I have also been to a local lawnmower guy who recognises the problem and said its just a matter of stripping wheels and rear drive shaft and lubricating. This is fine with me if was going to be a permanent fix but i have concerns it will need doing as much as monthly.

Has anyone else experienced this problem .... and even better is there any kind of modification that solves this issue (long shot i know)

As i understand it (happy to be corrected if wrong) as its driving forward no problem it rules out gearbox??

          • Possibly, but there aren’t many more moving components to point the blame at! Which model do you have? On some models there are plastic bushes/collars that sit on the axle between the wheel and the gearbox, these are supposed to spin freely, but can seize up as the axle develops rust/crud on it. To cure this you’ll need to take the wheels off, drop the axle and gearbox assembly off, then take the bushes off and clean the axle with some emery cloth. Reassemble with some light grease.

I have the HONDA IZY HRG 536 VK ... im guessing it probably has the bushes

Worth using silicon grease on all the wheels, won't be affected by the moisture ingress.
