Gardening by the phases of the moon

I popped into our local garden centre (think more like self sufficiency centres than the conventional garden centre in the UK) this afternoon.

As I paid for my purchase I noticed a display box on the counter of books with information about following the moon and its phases when tilling soil, planting seeds and seedlings or harvesting.

It's an appropriate subject when you look at tonight's perfect full moon. I suspect there's a lot of activity and my neighbour is working a field adjacent to ours as I type.

I've just taken this image of the rising moon (it's a bit grainy but it gives you an idea of how dominant it is).

  • I wish you hadn't posted that picture Phil, it makes me envious.

This is a subject that when I get a bit more time, will investigate further. We picked up some gardening magazines in France and in one of them there was a large piece about it. I have no idea what it said but I would like to run some sort of trial to see if it works.

Sorry Simon...I won't tell you what the weather's like then;)

We've covered this topic a few times on LJN before: http://www.google.fr/webhp?rlz=1C1SKPL_enFR407FR407&sourceid=ch...

  • Enough said
  • Hi Philip

I was seduced into buying one of those books from Gamme Vert last year.

Seemed like a good idea at the time but after struggling to understand it in French I kinda gave up. I get the feeling it would be complicated enough in English!

It's a shame, as moon-phase gardening is common here and quite successful judging by the size of some of the veggy!

Also, the saints days have a big influence too but I guess that's another subject!

    Cheers

    Phil

  • Mad as box of frogs....the night time is for beer and sleep.

  • A customer of mine today said she was waiting to carry out some jobs in the garden until after the full moon.  She was hoping this would usher in better weather.  Interesting topic.

Did anyone catch glimpse of the supermoon over the weekend?

  • It was a bit cloudy here over the weekend but it was very bright last night. Glad to be doing a 'sort of trial' now.
