Garden Waste

Wondered if anyone could helpBeen in business 18month now, think i may have been a bit naive!Do i need a waste license to remove garden waste?I always thought the waste license was just for when you remove things like household rubbish? If i need the license, what things will it cover me to remove from a site? Also where can i get details of it? Cost? etc

  • I dont take my waste to a coucil depot though, i take it to a green waste dump where they recycle it. They obviuosly have a green waste license so i assumed because i take somewhere, where they recycle it i wouldnt need the license?

Hi Steve - Im in Edinburgh and just applied for my license which is £157 for 3 years. I have heard that the fine if you get caught carrying waste is 5k plus. They are really strict up here and will only let you in 3 times without it and then they block you from every site! I got mine from SEPA but not sure if its different elsewhere.
Someone will be along to give better advice soon!

  • The depot you take it to will have to be registered as a waste broker. You have to register for a waste transfer licence. Although you could possibly be exempt if you have a property which has a registered farm holding number or if you are a nursery / horticultural business based at your home business premises and as such are 'an agricultural business. Transferring natural stone materials is also exempt.

    Hi,

Yes you'll need a licence. The place that I take my waste to has never asked to see my licence. I think for around a pound a week for three years it's not worth the hassle if you get stopped not to have one.

    Check out the following thread:

  • Steve, is this place on sheepbarn lane, near the end of Layhams road?

Where ever you take it you should have a waste carriers licence, if you get a pull from plod when loaded up with waste you are effectively working illegaly!

This is a grey area and should be approached with caution. Previous threads have also covered this topic.

I would recommend that you get a waste carrier licence (about £180 for 1st 3 years, £100 for every 3 rears after that).

Waste Transfer Notes also need to be issued (not necessarily after each transfer of waste, can be totalled up over days/weeks/months etc) and correct EWC codes given which describe the waste.

There is also the benefit of when you have the carrier licence you can remove other types of waste if you are ever asked to or need to.

I am a waste carrier and I have no regrets whatsoever in signing up. I have modified my Invoice software (Sage) to create my waste transfer notes as well so this helps to cut down on my paperwork.

The licence can be purchased from the Environment Agency but can take several weeks to be processed once they have your payment.
  • Yeah its just at the end of layhams road, why???
think the farm is called highams farm, layhams road, owned by pete johnson.

  • Strange as i asked at local tip and was told " no problem more you can bring us the better" Why the different attitudes I wonder?

The law says you do but how many people actually HAVE the license and how many have actually been caught or even stopped?

Had two vans pulled over on Thursday and checked but I think it had more to do with speeding :-) Quick chat and free to go on our way
  • No reason, i knew it was there, but for me its still slightly cheaper with a small waste load, to tip at the council run trade sites in Beckenham or Bromley, i have to give a waste transfer note every time i tip or they will turn you away. On my very first visit they also asked to see my carriers certificate!
