If anybody is looking for work in Edinburgh this year, let me know.

We are also keen to replicate the model in other locations, ideally partnering with local landscaping businesses. Essentially we would supply the website and all the online ordering infrastructure and admin, SEO etc, local partner fulfills the orders on the ground.

See https://christmastreedeliveries.co.uk/ by way of example.

Derby and Maidstone are good examples of the kind of locations that would work quite well. Reasonable sized towns, with good local Chirstmas tree farms fairly close to prime delivery area.

The local website can be branded to promote your landscape business and customer emails can be used to cross promote your landscaping business as well after Christmas, and vice versa. Margins are very high on Christmas trees, and it is a good repeat business product.

So if there is anybody in Edinburgh keen to talk about opportunities this year, or anywhere else in the UK for next year, please get in touch, either on here or at info@edinburghchristmastrees.com - thanks!

Is Social Media Marketing Worth The Effort?https://landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/is-social-media-marketing-worth-the-effort2022-04-11T09:33:28.000Z2022-04-11T09:33:28.000ZMy Garden Designhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/my_garden_design

A question for all of you landscapers and gardeners out there - and the suppliers too. One the reasons, aside from raising more taxation for the change, is to incentivise our industry to seek out and use more efficient and greener machinery. This is very laudable but I am not sure the industry is quite ready yet due to the lack of choice in battery and hydrogen powered plant and equipment. In the meantime we will be forced to pass on significantly higher operating charges to our customers - on top of everything else at the moment this seems almost certainly to produce double digit rises in most areas.

So how are we all feeling about this latest Government initiative which comes into force very shortly?

I signed up to this forum a while ago so have read a few threads on setting up a business, I feel now I’m ready to take the plunge and want to launch a garden maintenance and hopefully design business. What I want advice on is what to include on flyers/ business cards with regards to starting off doing the things that I feel comfortable with. I have some RHS 2 training and I’ve just started studying RHS level 3 in Garden Planning and design and have been doing an Arboriculture course in lockdown.

I have a background in textile design and my ambition is to eventually focus on garden design but would like to work as a gardener now, I really do enjoy weeding, so I might as well get paid for it! So far, I have done a couple of garden design projects for places I volunteer at, (planting plans you can see on my website) and for family. I suppose what I’m not confident with is a customer wanting a larger garden design project and me not having any experience doing landscaping, or doing plans a landscaper can work from.

I am going to be cycling or motorbiking to jobs and using mostly manual tools so I could emphasise a quiet, green service, with a smaller carbon footprint as a USP. I design with pollinator-friendly plants and want to do wildlife gardens that will look stunning, not just the usual wildlife gardens which some people may see as 'messy'. There are some very ‘green areas’ in South Manchester, so I should be able to access those sorts of customers. I am confident in offering weeding, pruning of plants and shrubs, basic hedge trimming (I'm not going to be carrying a ladder), planting, garden tidying and plant advice, so I could list those as services. I've also thought of doing a wildlife garden audit service where I advise people how they could attract more birds and wildlife, what's good and bad in terms of wildlife in their garden and say how it could be improved. That service could lead into offering a full design. But it’s what to include about design on my flyer or business cards, should I include ‘garden design’ ...or just 'planting design'?

Advertising on Barkhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/advertising-on-bark2021-02-19T22:15:00.000Z2021-02-19T22:15:00.000ZAngela Sharphttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/pruneandtidy
Hello allI know a few of you have mentioned getting work through online agency Bark in other conversations I wondered how many of you have used it and how you've found it for actually finding work. Do you find that the leads are more often than not only thinking and researching what they want done, and if more than one professional responds, do you find yourself in a bidding war to get the job.I don't like the idea of paying money to get leads which may well not then employ you anyway. I know this is a risk with all advertising, but I've read quite a few bad reviews from traders who feel that it is not worth the outlay and in fact when they don't get any jobs from the leads, or the leads turn out not to be 'real' (phone numbers not working for example) getting their money back is extremely difficult. I've seen very good reviews from most end users but I wondered how Bark get their leads. If I do a google search on gardeners Bark is not something I recall seeing near the top and also how many people would actually go through an agency like this to search for traders. What makes it seem worth their while to use them?Any thoughts about this service would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to lose out on decent jobs, but I don't want to get fleeced either! They keep badgering me in my email inbox and often that isn't a great sign.
Thoughts on "Your Garden Made Perfect"https://landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/thoughts-on-your-garden-made-perfect2021-02-18T11:44:01.000Z2021-02-18T11:44:01.000ZAngela Lamberthttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/AngelaLambert15

I've been asked to write an article about BBC2's new garden makeover show, Your Garden Made Perfect.

Has anyone else watched it yet? On the one hand, the composite geomembrane laid in the subgrade slope needs anti-seepage treatment, with its connection to form a whole slope anti-seepage body, lower and vertical anti-seepage toe wall composite geomembrane laid, on the other hand, the slope of the connection, the composite geomembrane cutoff wall and toe constitute a whole, in addition, the composite geomembrane, the upper connection shoulder beam, so that the dyke foundation of the vertical cutoff wall, composite geomembrane slope, the top cap of the concrete cutoff system of a fully closed.

First of all, in the process of composite geotextile construction, it should be noted that the distance between the composite geomembrane and the surrounding of the construction environment should be consistent, and there should not be too much space. The composite geomembrane should also be connected closely, so as to facilitate the impervious function of the composite geomembrane. In the construction of time to pay attention to the foundation above the sand and other impurities are clean, because the existence of impurities will largely affect the impervious effect of composite geomembrane, composite geomembrane in laying time anchorage must be done.

How to use composite geomembrane the most scientific? Geomembrane Liner Frabrication is a new impervious material, because of its super-strong anti-seepage ability and anti-aging ability, the composite geomembrane is widely used in all pools, artificial lake bottom dam and other places that require anti-seepage and anti-leakage operations, but there are still many people do not know how to use the composite geomembrane reasonably.

Although the composite geomembrane has a strong effect on anti-seepage and anti-leakage, it is not unlimited to use everywhere. Under acidic conditions, the composite geomembrane is difficult to reflect its effect. Generally, the hdpe black roll geomembrance will shorten the life span, cause cracking and hardening of the membrane layer under the long-term acidic corrosion.HDPE anti-seepage membrane, a kind of anti-seepage material separated by membrane, can be used in acid-alkali corrosive reservoir with excellent effects. Different from composite geotextile membrane, it can be used in waste landfill, sewage treatment pool, aquaculture industry, etc., and has been recognized in China and selected by major design institutes.

Just thinking of signing up and buying a card reader for £25. Transactions are charged at 1.75% which seems ok to me. Really want it for tempting cheque paying older customers into using their debit card instead when we complete a job rather than a trip to the bank for us. We're also doing a plant fayre this summer and thought this would increase sales. The local representative gave me a call and was very helpful and I decided to take out a yell ad on yell.com with a link to my website and the "Connect package" that puts you on 500+ directories, allegedly! I had many phone calls asking me if I had signed the paperwork and at the particular time I was busy and I hadn't, so I eventually signed the paperwork electronically, which is over the phone and using a smartphone.

Supposedly I was all set to go, apart from I couldn't log into my account as it appeared that yell had found an old account mixed up with my new account, this took numerous phone calls and nothing actually happened. Yell has a help team in the Philippines which unfortunately were unable to understand my basic straightforward questions. I cancelled my direct debit as I hadn't actually made any payments at this point and then a month or so later I received an email threatening to take me to a debt collector to collect the payments for something that I haven't received!

I then spoke to a manager at yell who could understand my problem and wiped off the debt and gave me three months free with yell.com. I also made an appointment to speak to him, in view of being in front of the laptop as he wanted to show me how to get the most out of yell, he failed to call me. I then made another appointment for 8:30 AM today, which once again he failed to make contact with me, therefore wasting my time waiting for him to call while I was in front of the laptop!

After doing some quick research, my Webmaster has some tools where he can submit my website to directories for a one-off payment of 25 pounds I believe, much cheaper than yell! I also looked up yell.com on www.alexa.com and they don't rank particularly high, 497 in the UK and 15,150 globally.

Just out of interest, what is your experience with yell?

Thank you for reading.

Roy

Flyer Distributionhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/flyer-distribution2018-02-04T17:54:18.000Z2018-02-04T17:54:18.000ZBryn Dunkerleyhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/BrynDunkerley

Hi can anyone advise when the best time is to deliver flyers ready for the coming season?

I'm looking at having 30,000 delivered for Garden Maintenance and Lawn Care Services, in either February (which may be to early) or March

Also which gets the best results Solus or Shared Delivery?

Thanks

Radio, Facebook, Instagram, Newspaper...!?https://landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/radio-facebook-instagram-newspaper2018-02-01T10:26:48.000Z2018-02-01T10:26:48.000ZB Fhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/BF

I am at the time of year again where things are quieter and it gives me the opportunitty to assess the business and come up with some new ideas.

Since starting, I have always advertised in two local newspaper groups and it works well. Phonebook creates a couple of leads and might turn in to one or two jobs a year. Yellow pages a waste of time. We have a website but don't keep it updated and don't do any adword stuff. No facebook - business or personally.

The main parts of the business are two things; Maintenace and Landscaping.

We have commerical customers and we have residential customers. Ages do vary however I would say (and this is just a guess) that 75% of our custom are 50+ years old, probably more like retired age.

I am not sure how many enquiries a week I recieve, but say its 10, maybe 25% will turn in to revenue. I am almost certain it's always due to price as theres no doubt the customer would be happy with service and prioduct we would provide. I am not prepared to lower prices to increase that "lead to revenue" ratio, so my thinking is I need more leads coming in.

I have a meeting with a local radio station soon and I have approached business gateway for some advice too - they are arranging a meet with their business analyst.

My target audience will be the 50+.

What avenue would you recommend or have had experince in to push awareness and create leads in.

Poor service from advertisng agencyhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/poor-service-from-advertisng-agency2018-01-18T18:16:57.000Z2018-01-18T18:16:57.000ZJohn Mathiashttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/JohnMathias

Just wondered if anyone could offer some advice. I took out a 2 year advertising contract with a digital media company to advertise my landscaping services on a tv screen in the local post office. The service I have received to date is terrible starting with them telling me it was live a good month before it actually was live, they make promises to do work which drags out for weeks and involves several emails from myself to get them to do anything they basically dont deliver what they promise and I feel I am throwing more good money after bad and would like to terminate this but unfortunately its a legal contract and they are quick to get back and threaten me with a debt collection agency for a breach of contract. Can anyone recomend the next course of action maybe the advertising standards Ombudsmna or other body? to complain about this service as it obviously falls on deaf ears with this company.

Thank.

John M

Starting outhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/starting-out-32018-01-11T15:11:53.000Z2018-01-11T15:11:53.000ZDan Younghttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/DanYoung
Hello everyone. So I'm a long time free member on here and recently a pro member. I have decided it's time to get back to being outdoors. Currently I have my own ltd servicing, repairing steam turbines in the power industry. I have sort of fell into that and it's rubbish. It pays really well but it's not for me in the long term.My back ground is greenkeeping and golf course construction. Which is where I was employed until redundancy at the end of the recession in 2010. So now I'm coming back. I have all the usual quals associated with greenkeeping, golf course construction. So now do I target my local area of north Somerset for garden maintenance or move into landscaping and update my qualifications to fit that as well.Any advice on the above would be brilliant.
Attracting the right kind of customerhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/attracting-the-right-kind-of-customer2018-01-05T15:20:50.000Z2018-01-05T15:20:50.000ZGreen Girl Garden Carehttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/HelenGreenGirl

When I start back to work next week it will be as a sole trader rather than an employer. I will be doing one week of regular maintenance alternated with one week of one off or infequent jobs. As my earning potential is limited by the hours I can work and the regular round is fully booked I need to make sure the one off jobs I attract will pay as well as possible. I have really good kit and 15 years of experience in garden maintenance and am extremely reliable so I'm confident that I am worth it!

I'm in the process of updating my website to reflect the change in my services and so would like any advice you can give me for attracting the right jobs (preferably half to one day one off jobs) and customers who are willing to pay a good rate for a quality result and good customer service. Also any clever hints for not attracting time wasters or people who want bargain basement hack and slash gardening!

I'm thinking of adding a facts page to my website and also introducing terms and conditions for the first time to protect myself from last minute cancelations or locked gates as I can't afford the lost income and have less flexibilty now I'm solo.

Thanks for your help.

Tendershttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/tenders2017-11-19T17:40:25.000Z2017-11-19T17:40:25.000ZJonathan Brewsterhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/JonathanBrewster
Been a country age since I've been on here, but got a question to ask you all.Where's the best place to find tenders?? And MyGardenSchool has now grown quite a lot. We're trialling an initiative where we'd like to find 10 people who would be happy to learn together in one class - and really feel like they would benefit from being taught by some of the best experts in the world (Piet Oudolf, Michael Marriott from David Austin, Dr Noel Kingsbury, Annie Guilfoyle, Dr Toby Musgrave and others). I would like to offer a select group of Landscape Juice Members this opportunity to trial a course of their choice with us at www.learningwithexperts.com/gardening (you can take your pick from there). But you must meet the following criteria:

Be a practising (or aspiring) gardener, landscaper or designer (ideally not formally qualified)

Not have experienced MyGardenSchool before

Willing to share your experience socially and take photographs of your work

What you will get: This is an experiment, so we're keen to follow your progress of how you learn and interact as a group, and understand how you interact with your tutors.

You really will get feedback from Dr Noel Kingsbury personally (or the other tutors you choose to study with). If more than 10 people want to do this, we will split you into groups. However we won't make this happen unless there is interest from at least 10 of you (as it's the group dynamic we want to study). We will need you to pay something towards the course, but once we reach 10+ volunteers we are happy to reduce the price to 50% of our normal rate (eg for Annie Guilfoyle's urban design course, this is a reduction of several hundred pounds).

Dr Noel Kingsbury and Piet Oudolf are right behind this study (as are the others), and are also producing a new course about the Highline next year.

I thought I would post on here to gauge interest. Here is where you can choose your course selection (we are assuming that Piet and Noel, and the higher priced courses will be chosen, as you get £100s off, but that may not be the case. Please let me know (and happy to discuss on here) if this is of interest. Or you can email me privately on elspeth@learningwithexperts.com - but I will let people know on here when we reach a group of 10.

Finally once you've all studied together, we like the idea of introducing you in person. We are currently looking to do a small show garden at Chelsea Flower Show next year, and would like to involve some of this group in it.

Please post here if you'd like to take part and if we do get 10 of you interested we will start the experiment (I will write back to you with the codes to access classes).
