Yep this true, our first ride on mower (simplicity) was from Ebay and we had a similar situation- where the mower was not as described in the listing- took the complaint to Ebay and they didn't want to know as it was excluded from their buyer protection. We fixed it ourselves in the end, sold it and bought a brand new Westwood. Not going to buy second hand again.
It's true that eBay is gaining a reputation as a place to 'off load' suspect/faulty gear with little come back for the purchasers, especially when items sold by 'individuals'. I know that this a gross over simplification, but the trend is documented. The more complex the item is the greater the opportunity there is for fraud, mis-description etc.
There have been cases where 'dealers' have off loaded equipment as individuals to get around the law. Am I right that eBay shops/dealers are still covered under Consumer Legisalation?
All that said, eBay is still an excellent place to source & purchase 'simpler' items or where you can go and view first.
I've bought a couple of mowers off Ebay and been very pleased with them...... I think as long as you know what to look for, you're ok. Generally, sellers with a good feedback, are a pretty safe bet I reckon.
