Drainage in garden.

So we have just returned from a quotation to finish some garden drainage that someone else had started as well as paving and a few other things. The other chap who had started the drainage had told the owner that he was going to connect it to the waste drain in the back garden... in my reckoning this is illegal and it should be directed to a soakaway?Am I right?

  • Yes think it's illegal.not sure if you can get permission but that would involve planning. I have always kept away from the mains and worked with soak always as there is rarely an obvious outlet.
    • Thanks Richard, I am 99% sure it's illegal and a soakaway is the best way for it
  • as far as i remember rainwater downpipe ok  to tie in for surface water, waste and sewer pipes aka the stink pipe a no no to tie into.

    • Thanks Matt,
I know it's a definate no to connecting to the main water waste pipeline under the garden just unsure as to what else can and can't be done.
  • Definitely no to connecting to mains drainage. Has to be a soakaway or similar. But not sure what the law is if their waste goes into a cesspit. Anyone know?

The thing is that with our heavy clay and high rainfall soakaways are usually useless so i always try to lay it so it runs off out of the property. But it is as far as I know illegal to put it into the waste sewer but ok to put it into the rainwater pipes. Taylor whimpey have been been "T"ng into the rain water pipe on my new estate in East Kilbride.
I also put drainage into a senior scottish water engineers garden who insisted it went into the rwp and not run off and as engineers tend to he give me the reasons and insisted this was absolutely acceptible. Its possible that there is a varience between the building standard regulations( Scotland) and the UK ones as there are many differences on the construction side of things.

The reason is simple- in periods of high rainfall, if everyone put their storm drainage into the foul drains, the system would be overwhelmed forcing the release of untreated sewage, usually into the sea as a last (controlled) resort.

The properties existing storm drainage will usually run to a soakaway. Sometimes they run into council mains storm drainage that will head to the nearest watercourse.

Connecting storm drainage to foul is sometimes allowed, subject to a hefty annual charge from the water company.

Think that is in relation to water run off from hard standing areas pathways car parks etc not water table or rainfall relating to landscaped areas
      • look farther down about garden drainage and soak away connecting into drains its all there look at it a bit closer
