'Don't use showgirls to sell roof tiles'

One of the UK's largest industry exhibitions is issuing a new code of conduct over the use of "promo girls".

Last year, UK Construction Week, held at Birmingham's NEC, faced criticism over the use of lightly clad women to staff an exhibitor's stall.

It featured Las Vegas-style showgirls selling roofing products.

Criticism of sexism at business and sports events has grown following the Financial Times' report into the President's Club ball last month.

Since then, promoters of darts championships and Formula One have said they will no longer use lightly dressed young women to adorn their events.

But some sectors are still using women in revealing outfits.

Did you read the article? It wasn't a feminist group telling them what to do. It came from the event organisers and this was also driven by the general public and women who attended events like this. So these kind of things are being changed because of the feelings of the general public which includes men and women and people who might happen to call themselves feminists.

      • PRO

        Yes I did, thanks.

I was talking about the wider issue that had been discussed in the Press, Radio and TV recently where many organisations are being pressured behind the scenes by so called ‘feminist Activists’.

As I said, I have an open mind on this.

        • PRO

Describing them as 'do good liberals' and saying they are forcing it on people hardly comes across open minded. Open minded means you see both sides but you didn't mention anything in support of the alternative view.

          • PRO

            Fully appreciate your views.

          • PRO

are you really being 'open minded' about this Green Girl? I'm still curios as to why you find this offensive. I'm pretty sure that if you took a survey of guys and asked them if they would be offended by male models stood in Speedo's with tanned, well muscled bodies, being used to promote a product or service most men would say 'good luck to them, I wish I had a body like that'. So explain to me why you are so offended GG?

            • PRO

Why should I be open minded. I'm telling you guys how it makes me and a lot of other women like me feel. The fact that none of you want to accept that or are bothered by it rather saddens me as I had thought things had changed and the majority of men I come across agree that it's outdated but then I do live in lefty liberal Brighton.

I also wouldn't use the term offended. I would say it alienates me and makes me feel ignored as a female trades woman.

  • PRO

I'm staying out of this one or I'll get banned.

  • PRO

Probably get slated for this but how did women flashing a bit of skin sell roof tiles??

    • Erm, sex sells mate. Did you not know that ?
