Does The Panel Think?

imagine a four meter high Leylandii hedge and lawn below.

Customer wants to break up the sea of green with five trees across a 14m hedge line.

I have suggested A bold line of five Jacquemontii Birch but they prefer more colour.  I have, secondly, recommended a line of Rowan using a mix of Jo Rock, Hupahenises and/or similar to give a combination of berry colours.

Am I being too twee?  What would the LJN Massive suggest?

  • Personally I would prefer the Jaquemontii option........but the customer knows best!

  • The rowans sound good to me though there are good crab apples to choose from. Though not colourful, the form of italian alders (strong leader, catkins) looks good against a neat hedge.

Some of the cherries, either spring blossom or the colourful barked Tibetan types look good against a green back drop.

  • Hi John - it may be a more obvious choice but for adding colour it's hard to beat the Photinia Red Robin Standard Trees.  Usually around 3.5-4m overall height (2m stem) I think they always look good with a dark green back drop.  They have the advantage of being evergreen and the colour change of the foliage from green to bright red in Spring is wonderful.  Very easy to maintain and keep looking good.  If the customers don't mind deciduous trees then 4-5m height Prunus Cerasifera Flowering Cherry Trees with their interesting bark, plum red leaves from Feb-Nov and pretty pink flowers in Spring are an impressive choice.
