      Don't even touch it.

Let is drain naturally and then discuss adding drainage before completing the garden.

If the garden floods lik this now then there's going to be ongoing potential for flooding later.

      • Thanks Phil - figured that would be best! No point trying to pump it out then?

I wouldn't Sam. You're just going to end up with a mess and it will be difficult to compact the underlying ground as the subsoil will remain waterlogged.

I think you need to rectify the cause of the flooding first (if that's possible, of course).

          • Again - just as I thought! Thank you for your input

You can't fix a ship in a storm. If there is a way to get the water to a drain via a Trench then perhaps I would but the drainage needs to be sorted before any type1 goes in.

Slotted drain from the patio area in a pea gravel covered trench down the garden into a temp soakaway ? Its risky as one drain might not cope with the quantity of water but it may keep it clear long enough to investigate a more permanent option and allow settlement? Worth digging the soakaway first to see how high the water table is though...

Don’t miss the obvious, if you have a long hose pipe and it will reach a point that is sufficiently lower you can just suck on the pipe to start a siphon to get rid of the water.

Not as quick as a pump, but definitely less expensive; and it works, we have drained footings and other excavations simply using a hose pipe, but you may need to leave it overnight.
