biodegradable weed control fabric

Does anyone have any experience using  biodegradable weed control fabrics?

There seems a lot of different options : from essentially rolls of paper / cardboard to mulch films ( 3-8 months degrade) , Jute mattings -- expensive ? degrades 18 months - to various new branded mulch mats -- degrades 3 years ?

Was looking at using for various planting jobs where problems weeds / plants need to be eradicated ( would imagine 16 months plus ? ) - leaving main planting to naturally expand and allow bulb and filler planting year 2 -3

Anyone using anything they can recomend?

  • I’m not clued up on the weed barrier but some I’ve seen you can see light through it so I’m sure weeds will grow any way so check that by holding it up to the light

yes -- and it looks as if jute doesnt have the strength to stop some weeds 'breaking through' -- they advise a total erradication of weeds prior to laying which kinda seems to destroy the point.

  • Isn't it easier to just delay the planting, let the weeds grow and then spray the lot with Roundup?

looking at alternatives to fit in with a more organic request -- and endless digging isnt viable

general weed supressing membranes are great but dont allow for the spreading nature of some plants or the later infilling with bulbs

Absolutely hate the stuff , weed seeds tend to germinate on the surface anyway , I tend to mulch around the base area of the new planting to try and surpress weed growth the new planting tends to expand more quickly and i also use a flat bottom wolf garten hoe to despatch any surface weeds also startted using a weed puller which is very quick and effective in removing perrennial weeds which are not too deep rooted .  Obviously the mulch has to be well rotted .

I recently saw someone using cheap artificial turf inbetween planting to cover the surface to surpress weed and it gave them something to walk on , It was nicely done and portable .
