Round my part of the world they dig plenty of big drains and build pumping stations.
Do they work? Are there any new ones being put in?

In the main they do. Most of this area in terms of height is below sea level with many of the rivers and drains well above the height of the surrounding land. About ten miles away from where I work is the lowest point in the country at Holme Fen.
