Algae removal on fences

I probably paint 20 fences a year for my regulars and have tried a couple of algae/moss removers which were pathetic and pressure washing (algae seems to come back quick even though fence is left to dry out). Any recomendations would be appreciated as some customers may be doubting me when I recommend quality fence paints and the green still comes through a year later, less if north facing. Is bleach and elbow grease the best way. Obviously Labour costs would increase dramatically. There must be something I can spray on that kills the spores.

Oh for an oil based paint or old engine oil, loved the smell of creosote.

Thanks

Jet washing is purely a short term solution, it’s distructive and opens up the ‘wood’, removes persetvatives and the cycle starts again.

Im a big fan of mmc pro, which we use for all similar requirements ( other products may do the same ).

  • +1                 I've used MMC-Pro on fences with great success............. sprayed some 12 months ago, theycame up like new and nothing's reappeared.  I used the 4:1 ratio and made sure the panels had a good wetting of the stuff.  Incidentally, there was a shrub bed adjacent to the fence.......... I covered up up some of the shrubs where possible to prevent drift onto them.............. but they were all fine... even the ones that got some on their foliage.

    • Thanks gents. will give this MMC pro a go if customers will pay for it (hopefully a no brainer)and if its not too close to hedges and shrubs on boarded fences.

By the way Graham, how long did it take for the green to go off the fence, so that it could thenn be painted if necessary.

      • It will go brown in a few days.................. takes a few weeks with some decent rain to actually  wash the dead moss etc off.  Regarding the shrubs, as I said, I covered some of them up but if you've got someone to give you a hand, they can pull the vegetation etc away from the fencing to allow you to spray it more easily.

    • +2 for MMC Pro!

Don't use it in the cold...

  • If there is too much risk of overspray you can sponge it onto the fence by hand.

Alternative to MMC Pro with the same active (DDAC) is Algoclear and the new MAC Hi-Power which is 4 times as strong - great ecobony (1 or 5L). HERE

As Gary said, pressure washing blasts spores and algae into the grain. Algoclear and MAC will bind with the lignin in wood and create a preventative action to stop algae gaining a hold for a good period (dep. on aspect, shade, etc) Easy to overpaint..

Looks like we should try out MAC Hi Power then :)

We default to what we have used for years but does no harm to ‘look over the fence’ see what else is available !

p.s. never jet wash cheap larch overlap panels from the likes of B&Q and Wickes unless you want to cut thru’ them
