The Art of Japanese Gardens

There is no doubt that Japanese gardens are both beautiful and inspiring. Without being able to pinpoint one particular feature, they are also instantly recognisable.

With stock ranging from feature stones and boulders to aggregates and bespoke, we are in the ideal position to supply to Japanese gardens. With a long running history with the Japanese Garden Society, particularly our Chairman, Michael Heap, we have come to understand the needs of natural stone within these outstandingly relaxing spaces.

There are many reasons why Japanese gardens are desired; they are often viewed as areas of miniature idealised landscapes, which bring peacefulness – whether it’s a garden designed for contemplation and meditation or designed to be viewed from a distance or along a set path.

Japanese Show Gardens

Drawing on our experience and knowledge, we were asked to supply the natural stone elements to BALI Yorkshire and North East’s show garden at this year’s Harrogate Spring Flower Show. A collaboration between their members, the ‘Tea for Two’ show garden is inspired by the English tradition of ‘Afternoon Tea’ and Japanese Tea Ceremonies. It also draws on certain influences from the Tofuku-Ji Temple gardens, located in Kyoto, particularly the stone aspects from the North garden, with its cubism and surrealism in the use of stone. To help in bringing the garden’s vision to life, we are supplying stone lanterns, granite bowls, boulders, porphyry plattens and aggregate.

Japanese themes are also appearing among other flower shows in 2016. With hopes to raise awareness of the society and recruit new members, the Japanese Garden Society are exhibiting at this year’s RHS Cardiff, where they will be located within the Learn and Grown Marquee. Always a popular choice for Japanese gardens, we were approached regarding our Silver Grey Granite Aggregate to feature on the stand, and, given our relationship and history with the JGS, we happily donated the materials free of charge.

The Japanese Garden Society

As part of the JGS, visits to gardens and events are regularly arranged. It is with great pleasure that our Chairman, Michael Heap will be joining the JGS on their tour of the British Geological Walk at the BGS headquarters in Keyworth on 07th May.

Our involvement with the Japanese Garden Society has a long history, with us having supplied to many of their show gardens. Some examples of Japanese gardens we have supplied to include; Kyoto Garden at Holland Park, Willowbrook Hospice, Warren House, Walkden Gardens, Kaetsu Centre, Hammersmith Park and various show gardens over the years at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
