Today, Relate publishes the first report presenting findings from our landmark survey of the UK’s couple, family, and workplace relationships, The Way We Are Now.
Along with our partner in Scotland – Relationships Scotland – we commissioned a representative survey of over 5,000 people across the UK to profile the nation’s relationships. This wide-ranging survey – one of the largest of its kind – offers a unique and rich insight into the state of our relationships in the UK today.
This first report, Labour of love – or labour versus love?, looks at our relationships and work, examining the quality of our relationships at work and the extent to which we’re able to balance work and relationships effectively.
We know that both love and labour are important for our wellbeing. We’re social animals and we need good relationships with others to thrive – we suffer in isolation. Meaningful, satisfying work which can be a labour of love rather than simply hard graft, is important to our wellbeing – we’re productive beings too.
But our wellbeing also depends on a careful balance between the two. The extent to which work contributes to wellbeing depends in large part on relationships at work. Our relationships at home are also both affected by and in turn impact upon our work – achieving an effective work-family balance is essential to our wellbeing and to our performance at work.
