Five specialist local nurseries, each with a national reputation, are coming together for a rather special plant fair at Wimborne’s Knoll Gardens on Saturday 12 September.
For keen gardeners the east Dorset fair provides the opportunity to buy top quality plants, including a selection of rare and unusual varieties. And, with acknowledged experts all in one place, it is also possible to get the answers to a wide range of questions about specific plants and growing conditions.
Plants on sale include azaleas, ferns, grasses, blueberries, heathers, camellias and rhododendrons – many award-winners in their own right - and all from some of the UK’s best nurseries
Participants include Forest Edge Nurseries who recently returned from Hampton Court Flower Show where they received a Silver Gilt Medal for their exhibit created for the Heather Society. Showing how heathers can provide year round colour and a good food source for bees, the stand also caught the eye of Carol Klein and the BBC team. Other participating nurseries include Trehane who will be bringing some wonderful autumn flowering camellias such as the white, strongly scented Gay Sue, as well as different varieties of blueberry plants; trade-supplier Country Gardens Plant Sales with unusual ferns, shrubs and some lovely clematis including the very hardy, pale pink Clematis Elizabeth and the latest varieties of azaleas and rhododendrons from the Koirin Azalea Centre.
The specialist plant fair runs from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 12 September at Knoll Gardens, Stapehill Road, Hampreston near Wimborne, BH21 7ND. Admission to the fair, and parking, is free. Normal admission charges apply to Knoll’s four-acre show garden but free tours will be included within the charge during the day, please ask on arrival.
