These will generally have a reel of steel blades (in the case of some domestic 'lawnrakers' springs are used intead - nowhere near as effective though!), these literally slice through the buildup in the lawn and throw it out of the front or rear of the machine, either onto the floor or into a collection box. Smaller parts of lawns or more awkward areas may require a springtine rake or hand scarifer to get to the bits that the machine can't, especially near the edges of the lawn or around obstacles such as paving slabs or trees.

There will be a LOT of waste removed, far, far more than you are likely to think!

How do I obtain a scarifying machine?

These machines are available to hire or buy from most good garden machinery stores - however - it is very, very easy to completely destroy a lawn with a scarifier if you are not familiar with all its adjustments, operating characteristics etc.

A good machine can involve outlay of hundreds of pounds on a machine that may only be used anually and will likely not start when needed after a winter in the garage!

Perhaps this is one situation when its best to employ a grass care professional instead of purchasing your own machine.

Do I need to do anything before or after I scarify my lawn and when is best to do it?

If you are scarifying your lawn to remove thatch only, cut the lawn quite short before scarifying as this will help minise the 'tugging' action of the scarifier machine at the grass plant roots and help only remove the rubbish that you are trying to target.

If you are scarifying to remove moss, then it is strongly recommended to apply a moss killer such as lawn sand or sulphate of iron approx 14 days before scarifying to kill off the moss before you try to remove it with the scarifier machine. In more severe cases, it may be necessary and indeed desirable to remove the bulk of the moss with the machine before using these products to treat anything remaining.

It must be noted that all moss killer products should be used with extreme care as they will leave stains on paving etc that cannot be easily removed.

We strongly recommend fertilizer application following scarifying to help the grass recover faster.

Overseeding may be necessary to rebuild any particularly bare patches of the lawn.

The best time to scarify is Spring or Autumn - but don't do it in the depths of winter, or when there is frost or snow forecast (no matter what certain franchised lawn care businesses may tell you about this being acceptable practise!) and certainly don't carry it out in the middle of summer as your lawn will likely turn brown and die due to heat stress.

After reading all this, you don't feel like scarifying your own lawn is a task that you can confidently undertake yourself?

Here at South Lincs Grass Care, we service a wide area from our base near Spalding, Lincs and have a selection of different scarifying machines to suit all requirements from small models for domestic lawns upto a 1.2 metre wide, tractor mounted model for large lawns, pitches and amenity areas.

Being licensed waste carriers, we can dispose of all of the thatch, moss and rubbish that our powerful machines and trained operators will remove from your lawn and advise of the best ways our service can enhance and maintain your revitalised lawn using products not available to the general public - We are equally capable of cutting a carefully manicured lawn and helping you with a regime of lawn treatments, lawn fertilizer applications and spring or autumn lawn scarifying to keep it at its very best or regularly cutting larger area of longer, rougher grass around commercial sites. We have a small fleet of different mowers to help us give the best possible finish, whatever the area.

For the majority of domestic and some 'premium' commercial lawns, we use roller mowers to leave a high quality, classically striped lawn. For other commercial contracts, for example pub beer gardens/restaurants and other small commercial lawns that we cut regularly, we use a mulching mower. This helps us provide a cost effective service as there are no lawn clippings to dispose of. This machine can be quickly converted to collect, as in the autumn or winter lawns may become covered with leaves, which cannot be mulched.

We also have ride on mowers suitable to collect, mulch or discharge clippings - offering a variety of options for our commercial clients and domestic customers who have a larger property.

But we don't just do grass cutting - we also carry out professional hedge trimming and hedge reductions too. Indeed many hedges have been proved to benefit from being cut regularly, we recommend twice yearly cuts to leylandii and beech hedges (dependent on the speed of growth). Regular cutting not only keeps the hedge under control but also promotes vigorous, healthy growth and prevent the hedge looking sparse and 'thin'.

Many customers are thankful of the fact that as part of our service package, we remove all green and garden waste from their properties, taking it for composting at Organic Recycling in Crowland. For more details on how they help us deal with our waste in an environmentally friendly way, see their website at: www.organicrecycling.co.uk

Our association with Organic Recycling also means that we can offer our customers their range of quality soil improvers, marketed under the name Bettaland Products. See www.bettaland.co.uk for details. We have achieved good results with these products in breaking up the heavy, clay soil which some areas of Spalding suffer with.

As we work a relatively small geographical area, we are able to provide a highly cost domestic garden and commercial grounds maintenance effective service, without compromising on quality. We offer regular services to all areas around Spalding, including Moulton, Weston, Pinchbeck (Including Pinchbeck West), Gosberton (including Clough and Risegate), Pode Hole, Spalding and others besides.

Fixed price services help you budget for the works, whilst we offer a choice of payment systems to help make payment simple. We accept cheques, cash, standing orders and BACS payment to suit your needs and operate 30 day payment system with our commercial clients.

Whatever your requirements, call us to arrange a free, no obligation quotation.

Phone: 07745 247488

Email: anpservicesspalding@yahoo.co.uk

Find us on the Internet: www.anpservicesspalding.com

A visible reason to use a PROFESSIONAL garden maintenance business...https://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/a-visible-reason-to-use-a-professional-garden-maintenance2011-09-11T15:22:45.000Z2011-09-11T15:22:45.000ZAdam Pilgrimhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/AdamPilgrim

Here at ANP Services Spalding, we pride ourselves on the quality of our workmanship, each and every task being carried out to the best of our abilities.

Continuous reinvestment in professional equipment leaves an unbeatable finish to lawns and hedges at your property, whether you have a domestic or commercial situation.

The lawn below is one of our regular jobs - initially taken on as a 'one off cut' whilst the customer was on holiday. We are confident that in time mulching on this site will help improve the grass through feeding the poor and nutrient lacking soil that exists on several of the grass areas.

We can provide professional lawn mowing to domestic and commercial 'fine lawns' and also offer rough grass cutting services to all properties in and around the Spalding, Moulton, Gosberton, Pinchbeck and Pode Hole areas. With mowers from 16 inch cut to over 30 inch cut, in roller, four wheel, mulch and rear discharge we are sure to have a machine to suit your needs AND your lawn.

Don't forget it will soon be time for autumn lawn scarifying in our area - book early to avoid the rush!

ANP Services Spalding - 'For all your garden and grounds maintenance requirements'

Find us online: www.anpservicesspalding.com

Email us at: anpservicesspalding@yahoo.co.uk

Professional hedge trimming and garden services from ANP Services Spaldinghttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/professional-hedge-trimming-and-garden-services-from-anp-services2011-08-10T12:58:46.000Z2011-08-10T12:58:46.000ZAdam Pilgrimhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/AdamPilgrim
ANP Services Spalding have heavily invested in equipment over recent months, meaning that we can offer an even more cost efficent service to all of our domestic garden and commercial grounds maintenance customers in and around the Spalding area.

Our recently acquired Henchman working platform means that even high hedges on uneven or sloping ground can be quickly trimmed back into shape by our workers. This new equipment means that hedges up to approx 15 feet high are safely and easily worked upon, which creating a minimum of disturbances to beds, borders and other plants.

The equipment was recently trialed on a high unkempt privet hedge on extremely un-level ground, however it was both simple and quick to maintain a perfectly level cut even in these adverse conditions.
It was also called into use on one of our commercial hedge cutting contracts, whom required a full written risk assessment for all working at height activities. The Henchman was approved by their head of health and safety as a suitable solution to the problem.

We also recently acquired a compact ride on mower for some of the larger domestic gardens and commercial grounds maintenance that we carry out. Sulphate of iron and lawn sand kill moss so it cannot regrow.

We apply products AND scarify in BOTH directions to ensure both complete application of product and removal of all lawn moss/debris.
