The 600 plus members also find the tight greens testing while they soak up the stunning views of the nearby Gedling Country Park.

Michael is part of a four-man greenkeeping team that works tirelessly to keep the course in immaculate condition all year round. He admits that it can, at times, be a challenge with just four in the team and that it is therefore imperative they have the correct maintenance equipment in place.

In particular, cutting by hand in summer at Mapperley is just too tall a task for the four-man team but in winter there is no other option.

“You don’t get much hillier than Mapperley, says Michael. “It can get incredibly wet in winter and no vehicle can get to some of our greens without either marking the ground or sliding all over the place – and that can be very dangerous.

“Our previous greens mowers were getting old, they were always breaking down and the quality of cut was never brilliant so we knew that we wanted to upgrade. Ultimately, what we wanted was a good quality mower to cut the greens in winter.”

Michael visited BIGGA’s BTME exhibition to see what was on the market and after visiting a number of stands he drew up a shortlist of potential greens mowers – one of which was the Dennis Razor fine turf mower. Upon returning to Mapperley, various mowers were demonstrated but for Michael and the team there was one which particularly stood out.

“We had the Razor on demo and were instantly impressed. The members loved it and they could instantly tell which green it had been demonstrated on. Even when the treasurer came out, he saw the quality of cut and said ‘”right, we’re having them now.”’

“The other mowers we tried just felt very heavy and more difficult to manoeuvre in comparison to the Razor. It was the best option by far.”

Superbly balanced and ideal for golf greens and other fine turf surfaces, the Razor features a 560mm (22in), 11 blade cutting cylinder for a perfect finish. An ultra-short wheelbase ensures easy manoeuvrability and excellent performance, even on undulating surfaces. The Dennis Razor encompasses the simple ‘no tools required’ click height adjusters for quick and easy operation, a feature which particularly struck a chord with Michael and his team.

“I don’t like machines with too many gizmos - I like one that is simple, straight forward to use and does the job which it is supposed to do. We’ve been using the Razors for a year now and they have been fantastic.

“In my opinion the best features on the Razor are that they are reliable, incredibly well built and easy to use. They keep the weight off the greens in winter and the cut that it offers in terms of presentation is fantastic. Since we’ve been using the Razor the greens have been a different quality.

For further information or a no obligation demonstration, please contact Dennis 01332 824 777 or visit www.dennisuk.com

Dennis Razor tops the list at Merchant Taylors’https://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/dennis-razor-tops-the-list-at-merchant-taylors2018-06-12T10:10:45.000Z2018-06-12T10:10:45.000ZFusion Mediahttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/FusionMedia

After Richard Ayling, grounds manager at Merchant Taylors’ School, drew up a shortlist of new potential machinery to purchase, the Dennis Razor fine turf mower saw off competition to receive a unanimous vote from himself and his team.

The illustrious Merchant Taylors’ School in Hertfordshire has a glowing reputation for good reason. It boasts first-class results both in the classroom and outside on the magnificent playing fields.

The site in total including the prep school is approximately 280 acres and that comprises of 80 acres of sports fields on the main school site, 20 acres on the prep school site while the rest of it is made up of buildings, lakes, lawns and woodland.

In managing the maintenance and upkeep of this vast area, it is safe to say that Richard, who has been working at the school for nearly 23 years, certainly has his work cut out. He heads up a team of ten which consists of groundsmen and gardeners – all of whom play a vital role. Therefore, when it comes to purchasing new machinery, Richard insists that it must be a team decision.

“We were looking for something that was fairly simple to use, had easy height adjustment and a nice balance,” he says. “I took my staff to SALTEX in November last year and had a good look round the show to see what was on the market. We looked at various machines and drew up a shortlist. After a couple of demonstrations we were all in favour of the Razor.”

Superbly balanced and ideal for cricket pitches and other fine turf surfaces, the Razor features a 560mm (22in), 11 blade cutting cylinder for a perfect finish. The Razor was exactly the machine we were looking for.”

Richard purchased four Dennis Razors – one for the school’s lawn areas and three for cricket pitch preparations. The team normally start using the Razor 8-10 days prior to a game taking place and Richard was quick to praise the machine’s quality of cut.

“For cricket preparation we use the Razor to cut down to 3-4mm but they are superb for trimming off the squares as well and they cut nicely at 15mm too. Ultimately they produce a fantastic finish on every occasion.”

For further information or a no obligation demonstration, please contact Dennis 01332 824 777 or visit www.dennisuk.com

The Dennis Razor: The Ultimate Mower for Wycliffe Bowls Clubhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/the-dennis-razor-the-ultimate-mower-for-wycliffe-bowls-club2017-04-21T10:25:15.000Z2017-04-21T10:25:15.000ZFusion Mediahttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/FusionMedia

Wycliffe Bowls Club head greenkeeper Keith Freakley and his assistant Raymond John Carter have both praised their recently purchased Dennis Razor Ultra 560 for its ease of operation.

For the past six years, Keith has been looking after the stunning greens at Wycliffe Bowls Club, which can be found in Lutterworth, Leicestershire. As the club continued to grow and membership numbers soared, Keith brought in Raymond to take on the mowing responsibilities in order to enable Keith to concentrate on other areas of maintenance.

In taking their procedures to an even higher standard, Raymond was presented with a brand new Dennis Razor Ultra 560 cylinder mower – which made for the perfect start to his new role.

“The Razor Ultra has made life a lot easier for me. I was already familiar with Dennis, having used one of their machines at my previous club. That was an older model, which still worked a treat, but getting to use a brand new Dennis machine on my first day was just fantastic.”

“It is beautiful to handle, always starts with the first pull, and it cuts nice and even across the blade when you’re mowing. It also has a great roller to give you good runs on the green for that all important presentation.”

“I think it’s just perfect to use. It goes at a nice even pace and you can slow it down if you want to. In my opinion, it is the ultimate machine.”

The Razor Ultra 560 has been developed specifically to meet the demands of fine turf such as bowling greens, golf greens and cricket pitches. With a 560mm (22”) cutting width, the Razor Ultra 560 incorporates many key features including an 11 bladed cutting cylinder, ultra-short wheelbase for undulating surfaces, tungsten tipped groomer, compact handle design for extra maneuverability, click height adjusters and stub free transport wheels for easy transport from site to site.

Selected by many greenkeepers like Keith and Raymond for its quality of cut, the Razor Ultra 560 also boasts incredibly simple operation controls – something which Keith believes is essential.

“As a greenkeeper I don’t like anything too complicated – and in that respect the Razor Ultra is the best mower anyone could wish for. Before I purchased the machine I looked at other models but felt they were incredibly complicated to operate – I just couldn’t get on with them at all.”

“With the Razor Ultra it was totally the opposite. Instantly we saw how very easy it is to set it up and the click adjusters for a precise height of cut and controls are so easy that I think anyone could operate it.”

“The Razor Ultra is the first brand new mower the club has ever purchased - and the club has been going nearly 25 years. For that reason, we wanted to ensure we made the right decision and by all accounts we certainly did.”

For further information or a no obligation demonstration, please contact Dennis 01332 824 777 or visit www.dennisuk.com

For more news, reviews and insightful views, you can follow Dennis on Twitter @DennisMowers and like the company’s Facebook page – www.facebook.com/DennisMowersUK.
Seven years ago, Richard took on the role as head groundsman at Eastbourne College after an impressive fourteen years working as part of the grounds team. One of the first management decisions he decided to make was to refresh the turf maintenance machinery.

“A lot of our equipment was getting quite old; we had some machines that were over thirty years old and they were worn out. After looking around, we ending up purchasing two Dennis FT610’s mainly because we liked the idea of the interchangeable cassette system.

“At the time, our cricket squares were in need of some urgent attention and the FT610’s helped massively in thinning the sward out and getting rid of all the rubbish. The brush and verticutter cassettes have been invaluable to getting the squares to where they are now. The machines play a vital role in our maintenance programme. Both have 10 bladed cutting cylinders on them and then we’ve got a 5 bladed cutting cylinder which we use in the winter,” said Richard.

Richard and his four members of staff carry out all of their work in-house and do not use any contractors. As a result, the team must be well equipped with the best machinery on the market to look after the College’s five sports grounds at the Memorial Sports Ground, College Field, Links Field, Summerdown and New Field. The team certainly has their work cut out and Richard decided it was time for another machine to assist them.

“We had a look at what was on the market but when we put the Razor up against everything else, there wasn’t anything we didn’t like about it. It had everything we wanted and because of our experiences of using the FT610’s, we knew we couldn’t go wrong with another Dennis mower,” he said.

Superbly balanced and ideal for golf greens and tees, cricket pitches and other fine turf surfaces the Razor features a 560mm (22in), 11 blade cutting cylinder for a perfect finish. An ultra-short wheelbase ensures easy manoeuvrability and excellent performance, even on undulating greens. The Dennis Razor encompasses the simple ‘no tools required’ click height adjusters for quick and easy operation, a feature which Richard is particularly impressed with.

“The Razor’s easy height adjustment was a major selling point – it’s just so easy to use. We also liked that fact that it had a Honda engine because most of our machines have got them. To be honest Dennis machines speak for themselves – they almost do the job for you.”

Richard purchased the Razor from his local dealer. Lister Wilder, who Richard praises as being ‘very helpful’ went to Eastbourne College to carry out the demonstration and the rest, as they say, is history.

Eastbourne College recently played host to the South African national rugby team. The Springboks used the college’s pitches as their outdoor training ground in preparation for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

“It’s been great for the College. It was a lot more work but we were well equipped with machinery and it was a great experience,” he said.
