Just back from a long(ish) cross channel ferry into Newhaven earlier and just had to laugh at something I saw from the rear observation deck....

A couple of kids were shouting and pointing out to Sea at something they'd seen. I didn't pay much attention at first until their parents commented about a 'green carpet'.

I spun around and followed the direction they were pointing and had to do a double take. Off the side of the ferry, merrily bobbing away on the surface was a piece of artificial turf - some 3 or 4 metres square, with a single seagull perched in the middle and quite at home clearly ! It was a bit like a scene from Aladdin.

I so annoyed I had left my camera phone in the car, but how on earth such a large piece of artificial turf had found its way into/onto(?) the ocean amazes me - What a throwaway world we live in......

Possibly it was part of the bare foot bowling green off the P & O ferry multi million pound pacific cruiser !!

Must have been a strange sight! However, it does highlight the fact that when we are trying to reduce non-recyclable plastics and encourage more recycling, what about in a few years when the current round of artificial turf in so many gardens needs replacing? I'm all for real grass any day!

I was reading the other day about The Lebanon, where lorries transport rubbish to the landfill, and at the same time other lorries take 'older' waste and dump it the Med.

More worryingly, an old waste dump has been re-opened. As well as taking in new waste, lorries can be seen carrying old waste - much of it reportedly contaminated with chemicals - from the mountain and tipping it into the Mediterranean.

At a local livery yard there is secondhand astroturf on the lane where the horses are led into the yard, nothing spectacular about it, but I do raise a smile seeing the half a centre circle marked on it from its former use covering a football pitch.
