  thanks Richard but since posting have come across bluetooth receivers that plug into the 3.5mm socket on my current defenders ... For a tenner its worth a try

  I'm not a fan of music headphones whilst working. I personally think there are serious health and safety implications.....especially when operating machinery.

  Firstly, I like to listen to the sound and tone of any machine I'm working with.

  If music is masking the machinery's sound, it's difficult to hear when there's a problem with the engine, blockage or mechanical failure.

  There's also the wider problem of general awareness of what's around you. Listening to music can be distracting and may lead to an operator having an accident - either injuring themselves or someone else in the locality. I also believe that productivity and attention to detail can be diminsihed if one isn't giving the task at hand 100%.

    Just to add....even if I am weeding I still like to listen to the natural sounds around me such as birds or the breeze.

      You can still here outside noises when listening to podcasts, radio and music just don't have it up too loud. Working alone 5 days a week 8 hours a day for over 10 years there is no way I'd give up listening whilst working. Some tasks can be incredibly boring and monotonous especially on a grey wet or cold day. Radio 4 makes my job much more enjoyable, makes the day go faster and I learn heaps from all the different programmes and news so staying mentally stimulated too.

    Surely on that basis we had better ban radios in cars too?
    I agree that we need careful however I had a new kitchen fitted last week and the joiner had the radio on all day long and he managed to keep all his fingers where they should be when using his very dangerous tools.
    And as far as gardening power tools go I know I feel a problem as much as hear it.

    I'd suggest it's also about spacial awareness and concentration which can be affected if you have earphones playing loud music while operating, say strimmers / mowers etc.

      I really should learn from past mistakes! Trying to put a different view across to you is like trying to clear leaves on a windy day:)
