Winter weeds

Happy New Year to you all

Got a car park paved with setts that is rapidly turning green due to weeds, seedlings an the like. Would normally use a herbicide, but that seems to make no sense at this time of year so thinking of pressure washing. Or am I wrong? Suggestions?

Cheers

3314752994?profile=RESIZE_480x480Perhaps this ? It's what we use...It has a vertical, rotating wire brush. Excellent for moss, weeds and heaving soiling. It shows our use at a commercial site.

Alternately, Kirsten do a horizontal Polymer brush version.

You can hire them quite local to you.

I'd reserve jet washing as a last resort and only then with a FSC attachment (not forgetting you may need to 'making good' afterwards). It can be quite a destructive process )

Ohhhh - I like that ... Wonder if it's available in the UK ?

It is - via PDS Groundcare (who imports Eliet shredders etc).

          • I've got one, its not that good. The brushes only last five minutes and it flicks stones like a b*****d.

If the weeds are growing, then they will be susceptible to herbicide treatment - will be slower reacting than in warmer times, but will work eventually. Just make sure you get down on a warm day after frost gone - usual rainfast rules apply.

The big issue is what product to use for legally spraying hard surfaces that would be effective at this time of year.

Our experience suggests that products like Hammer are not effective once the surface temp drops below 5c. Also they are not rain-fast quicker enough at this time of the year.

As we know, weeds need to be actively growing for these products to be effective and if not, they are very, very slow to respond (if at all) to any systemic pesticide. The forecast for the next few weeks is one of reducing temps.

If you need to show instant impact I'd go with a mechanical solution and it stops a return visit to clear up, otherwise you need to assess cost of applying pesticide and it not working due to weather.....

We found pistol was ok over winter but of course very slow about a month for a kill and some of the stronger weeds grew out it! We do a bit over the winter to save a bit of time in the spring if we can get away with it!

Can Bayer Pistol still be used on hard surfaces since they banned blanket spraying in 2012/13 ?
