Winter Climber

Good evening all,

A client has asked for advice regarding putting a new climbing plant in her garden. Unlike her wisteria and clematis though she wants this one to look alive and well through most of the winter. Having giving it some thought i'm planning to advise a winter flowering jasmine. Before I do I thought i'd see if anybody else has a particular favourite that ticks those boxes?

Trachelopspermum jasminoides. Evergreen but the leaves often turn red through the Autumn/winter even though it retains them.

Fragrant white flowers in June. Needs a sheltered spot away from cold winds.

+1 for the Trachelospermum jasminoides, but also take a look at the Clematis urophylla 'Winter Beauty', I've got a few in my gardens and they are gorgeous....

Clematis armandii - beautiful white scented flowers in winter

+1 to both of these. Trachelospermum and Clematis Armandii Apple Blossom planted together look great together (both being evergreen), you could plant some summer flowering clematis for year round interest.

  • Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.

  • Yes for the Trachelopspermum jasminoides, but I find the Clematis Armanii can become an invasive mess.

Exactly the reason I choose the Clematis "winter beauty ", it's a good pruner and a beautiful scent at a stubborn time of year.

But personally I was brought up with Winter Jasmine, can't beat those cheerful yellow flowers in the depths of winter
