That last paragraph is what they have been targeting for years with unknown success.
I can't see anything to worry about. It's hard to put cash in your back pocket when 99% pay by bacs or cheques anyway!

I wonder how large the black economy is now ?

Probably not as big as it once was. One of the first questions I get asked by new clients is can I pay by online banking. Cash seems to be becoming a thing of the past.

Last figures I could find (for 2013) suggest the Black Economy is worth £150bn !

Think what that would do for the NHS, Social Care, Police and public services - maybe even bring headline tax rates down

Not sure if I believe that or not to be honest.
Not read the article but I'm assuming that includes drugs prostitution etc that can't be taxed anyway. Though the EU uses these extras to work out what countries owe the EU coffers apparently!

I would say that 10 years ago my banking was made up of 50/50 cash and cheques, now it is primarily bank transfers with the odd cheque,it makes my life so much easier, and it seems to me that the people who can afford my rates don't carry cash anymore, it's always "I'll transfer it to your account "...

Cash is only good to about £50 a week I think as that can pay for bits and pieces but after that it means a trip to the bank which is a pain since there aren't many now!<br/>
I know I can use the post office but that's always busy as there isn't many if those snow either!

Or snow as well! What happens to winter?
  • Likewise I am lucky that my van is red so I am not too worried ! :-)

I did find the headline on Thursday amusing in a Natioanl Paper with Rob the Builder across the front page!

Seriously, I think we will have to watch this space and see what happens.
