Which mower?

I'm nòt looking especially for specific brands and models, but really just the features that you'd want on a mower (i.e. Mulch plug etc)And if you could only have one mower, would it be a roller or wheeled? Or best to have a good roller model and a cheaper 4 wheel for first cut of the season etc.Hope that makes sense

  • I'm not sure why you'd wish to use a 4 wheeler just for the first cut. The weight of the mower just on four contact points will cause compaction rather than balancing the weight of the machine across the roller. There will likely be a sinkage issue too.

We use rollers all of the time and wouldn't cut a lawn without, just what we are set up to do though. A 4 wheeler may be important to some here that are maintaining areas where presentation isn't as important, just cut grass.

Features - simple height of cut adjustment and a good range (would love a 22/23mm option on our Hayters). Does anyone have a mower with more than 7 settings between 13mm and 60mm?

Not expecting the world in really wet conditions, but excellent collection in dry to damp conditions.

A fair speed. 2.7mph with the Hayters I believe which is good.

Just a reliable machine that is going to spend next to no time in the shop. All seem to have 2-4 week waits in my area.

  • Definitely a roller................. leaves a nicer look to the lawn + you can cut right up to the edge on beds etc.  I've an old wheeled version though that comes in really handy if I'm dealing with really long grass (like a "clearance" where the grass can be  a couple of feet tall)......... they collect the grass better with little clogging up + a roller will tend to flatten long grass making it difficult to cut.  I'd say go for the roller and then see if you can pick up a cheap wheeled mower as above...... will also act an emergency backup if the roller is out of action.

  • +1 for a roller.

7 height settings is nice, single height adjustment lever.

I use an old Hayter Ranger for other stuff, long grass, rough work etc. Good back up machine.
