Which hedge trimmer

Need some advice I'm looking for a fine cut fast hedge trimmer prefer used stihl range been looking at the hs80 can't find any info. The hs 82 tc has 5000 revs/ cuts per min ideal but out of my price range as I need to invest some funds into the combi system. I use an echo 1500 but it's dragging with age. Any help much appreciated. Graham

    • Looked at the spec and it's perfect but too many dollars you gotta justify it. Maybe I'll talk myself into it the more I look for alternatives cheers tom
  • Hi, I bought a Stihl HS56CE about a year ago and it has been a very good machine.  I liked it because the blade looked very well made and it was extremely light weight for a petrol machine.

  • I've binned hs 81rc back to hs 45 due to the weight. Other than fuel tank size I see no other advantage in day to day use

      • Go through a set every 6 months and change the blades once a month
        • We do a whack of pruning though about to start a job of 16000sqm
    • Thanks Matt does the 45 produce a neat cut particularly on shaping juniper hedges?

I have a hs45 as well as the 87t use the 45 most as well as the weight is too much on the 87 with the long blade.
As long as it's kept sharp it's fine (the45)
Both good but prefer the lighter one. If you go for it get the 24 inch as its better balanced

One crucial difference is the vibration levels. The HS45 has terrible vibe levels for both hands, meaning that it can only really safely be used up to two hours per day. It is not really suitable for long term commercial use, other than the odd bit here and there.

The commercial machines have vibe levels low enough to be used safely all day.

You need to watch these sort of things as an employer. Lots more reading here: http://www.hse.gov.uk/vibration/hav/advicetoemployers/responsibilit...

Personally speaking I can't use the HS45 for any length of time without it killing my hands. I use it as a backup machine only. The larger commercial models are vastly superior, despite increased weight.

The vibes are worse on the 45 it's true but I mainly do small hedges.
The big ones I use the big one or the long reach.
      • The 45 vibes are 3x worse than the 81/82 stihl !
