PRO

I have never owned a pair as i frequently lose secateurs (they often turn up when turning or spreading home made compost !). I use cheap ones, any that i can find locally when i need them. I have the opportunity of some serious plant work which i think warrants the purchase of a professional pair. I already have a pair of pellenc powered pruners that i use mostly instead of loppers for the thick stuff.

Can anyone give me their recommendations for which model to chose? I don't mind paying for the dearer models if they are worth it. Oh and i am a strapping six footer with hands like shovels (big in other words)

Thanks

  • You'll notice a difference, the cheap ones aren't nearly as nice to use. I think you need to go and try them for size, I swear by the twos as they are the perfect size for my hands.

Keep them really sharp: much better cut of course, but also less strain if you're doing a lot of pruning.

Felco number two normally covers most pruning jobs

  • I originally bought a pair of felco 7s with the twisting handle as this is supposed to reduce strain on your hand, however I found them to be more of a nuisance than a help, I now have 2 pairs of the felco 2s which are great, and keep the 7s as a back up pair.

Keep them sharp and look after them and they will last forever. Worth buying the pouch too, especially if you are prone to loosing them, and as they are sharp they can cut a hole in your back pocket and drop out.

    Hope this helps, Matt

  • I used to have no. 11 until I lost them. There the number 2 but have been streamlined. I reckon there a bit better for gettin closer to a union. Bit more expensive than no 2 though.
  • Look at 7's or 8's, (or is it 8's and 9's?), other than the way they are handed, (one for left handers, one for right), they are exactly the same. Comfortable, great to cut with, and with a well weathered 'cone', easily accessible.

Thanks for all your replies. I will go with the most popular answer which is the no.2. Safe bet i should think. Probably will buy the holster as i would hate to lose them.

    Stu, Do.

One of my guys cut himself on the thigh when his pair had sprung open in his pocket and as he bent down the blade cut his thigh. If you think about the male anatomy ..it was a close shave (no pun intended).

Ps. It's all No. 2's for us

  • Blimey, I've carried mine in my pockets for 30 years!

I've never suffered a severe wedding-tackle injury, but have to admit I could probably retire on the amount of pound coins I've lost through holes in my pockets caused by secs. Must make an effort to use the holster that's been in the van for about 10 years now....

Thanks everyone. Anybody bought from worldofffelco ? they are having a sale.

  • If you live near a Hilliers garden centre, they currently have a promotion on Felco No. 2 secateurs at £44.95 - with a trade discount of 20%, that makes it a really good deal!
