What's best on the road?

The new issue of Which? cars has come through this morning - we've both already been thru it checking the various Volvos - it's really just a bit of reassurance that we've made a decent choice. As it happens, was also checking LJN .... just wondering what everyone likes as the essential gardening vehicle? Should say that with 4+ years as sole trader working on mid-sized gardens providing maintenance including planting, etc., the Volvo V40 has been just the ticket for Fereday (though looking enviously at the V70). It covers the remit of family car (don't have the luxury of having two and I don't drive anyway) and business car, and doesn't attract the insurance premium of a 4x4 - not much offroading here, anyway!

  • My favourite was our Chevy V6 4.3 pick up. Totally ineffecient but great fun. Its still in our yard if anyone wants to buy it. It needs a bit of pimping though.

  • Cat - The location where you and Fereday are toying to relocate to you would find it more business like to have a more suitable vehicle.

Down South we love our stripes in the lawn so a nice heavy mower with roller, lots of lawn care and plenty of hedge works so ladders on the roof and they will probably insist that you cart the waste away with you. Whilst an estate car would probably be okay for day to day maintenance work it would hold you back from undertaking the bulk of the work load and of course the clients like to see a nice shinny sign written van parked on their drive way!
  • Eh up, we're right posh down south Cat
  • And no flat caps! Morris dancing is however tolerated at village fetes but start practicing drinking warm lager and cocktails. :-)
  • Hehe. I know the 'target' we're going for down South pretty well, though not personally (yet). I think the Volvo will pass muster - as will the rather large, heavy mower (with roller) which sits rather snugly in the back... though don't think it will be needed much given the target market's profile....

BTW - has that Chevy been to a levy...????? What is a levy, anyway???? Is it a problem if the levy runs dry????

  • It was the Levy's which burst in New Orleans. Dykes which of course have a completely different meaning in the US. Surely if you moving to home counties it is essential, (or seems to be as when I drive through), to get an 300 litre blacked windowed Range Rover.

My first boss, so long ago, was somewhat obsessed with Volvos, really old automatic 240s - and persuaded me to get one. I didnt go for the 240 and bought the worst 360 in the world. On popping in to get fags one morning came out of shop to watch car gently rolling away down the road with two dogs looking panic stricken in the rear window. After new handbrake and service at the same price as a decent newer car, I ended up having to let it float off down a river, the ford I was crossing was slightly higher than I thought. Funnily enough I have never been into Volvos since.

I was going to take it to a levy but thought if I got there and it was dry I'd be really fed up - especially with fuel costs being so high!
  • we had a volvo 740 estate got it for £600 it has 120 000 miles on it when we sold it it for £300 it had 350 000 miles and was still going strong passed all its mots and cost about 400quid in repairs ,but it was not cheap on fuel 30 35mpg

    Hi,

I've got a new style Ford Ranger double cab which does the job just fine. I've got a Mountain Top aluminium cover on the back which turns it into the mother of all tool boxes and my mowers handles for down so I can fit them underneath as well when required.

If I get any rubbish to dispose of I just use my trailer. (All of my regular customers have compost heaps and / or let me use their green bins).

It's also great because it can carry four people (five at a push) and any soil and dirt is kept completly seperate from the cab.
  • I couldn't manage without a van which in addition to the advantages listed by others cannot be seen inside making it less attractive to opportune thieves who do a nifty trade in lawn mowers & power tools! I'm very happy with my Toyota Hiace - in black, of course! Whatever anyone does do not buy a Vauxhall vivaro - mine was an absolutel nightmare - left me on 1st name terms with the RAC man & was scrapped when it collapsed beyond repair at a youthful 5 years old with verified 100k miles on clock...
