What insurance company for tool cover?

Hello,

I was just interested in finding out what insurance company is the best to cover you just for tools for theft or damage?
My Van insurance covers me up-to £3000.00 tool cover  which covers my Honda Mower, stihl combis, Blowers but we all know what happens when the scumbags break into your van and take the tools and you ring the insurance company and they offer you 250.00 for a 1200.00 Honda Pro , which happened to my old boss , with winter coming and the dark nights we have been getting more break ins in the area, ( northamptonshire) , Ive not got my sprinter van sign written as i feel this its more likely to be targeted for the tools.

Is there a company that replaces new for new? Or are on the ball and are not a pain in the backside to deal with?

Many Thanks

Richard

  • I would certainly be interested in any news on this. I was quoted £800 per year previously and that covers me for 4k worth of tools but with all sorts of exclusions. I didn't think it great value if I'm honest. My existing protection covers me for the tools in the shed but not on the van. Is there a dedicated provider who covers tools on the van at a reasonable rate?

Make it harder to steal.. deadlocks, van vault, decent anchor points with 16mm chain and closed shackle padlock. Maybe also an Alarm linked to your phone..
  • I would speak to Keeley at SJL Insurance Services.

Best to get these policies at the same time as all your others need renewing (if possible) as it will give you a much better bargaining chip with the broker. Get them to explain what situations are covered and what aren't, what you'll get if you make a claim etc - not all policies are the same, and SJL were very good at explaining the various quotes.

    Trust Insurance are good,

of the top of my head, Public and employers liability and tool cover 10K is around £75.00 per month

    • It's all fine and dandy until you need to renew after making a claim. I would put a lot of effort into securing and alarming your van, and linking it to your mobile. Pretty easy these days.

Sadly, you need to get hit for north of a couple of grand to be worth claiming for in my experience. So people inflate their claims. Which inflates premiums across the board. It's a loose-loose situation, unless you're a thieving scumbag it would appear.
