Vehicle insurance tip

Just a follow up on the recent threads about van insurance, maybe this is of use to someone!

My renewal from Commercial Vehical Direct came through. £437 with Ageus. Doing a quick "compare" search I came up with lots of cheaper options.

Calling CVD, The renewal was able to be "lowered" to £220. With Ageus, under exactly the same terms.

Not checking would have been over £200 in the broker's pocket for nothing. It's always worth checking like-for-like and challenging them every year.

The FSB has just reported in its monthly business magazine that commercial vehicle insurance costs have dropped considerably in H1FY2015 compared to H1FY2014, citing many reasons.

Are we seeing Insurance companies (and brokers ?) taking advantage of consumer/business 'apathy' and, as Paul has just shown, it can cost you dearly :)

  • Blimey £220!! We currently run 2 vans with insurance coming in about £700 per vehicle for myself and 2 named drivers all with clean licenses and full no claims with me having been driving since the beginning of time !

The price of city living I suppose

    • I'm not in a low-risk postcode, Paul.

I think a lot of it is my age (48), long no-claims (about 15 years I guess) and no convictions (touch wood). I don't have any of the extra gimicks on it either.

I'm the only driver, which makes a difference as well, apart from my partner being covered as it reduces the premium. I get a better deal naming her on my classic car policy as well, even though she never drives either vehicle. Apparently it makes me a better risk having her named, but I can't see why!

It's always worth a few minutes filling out the details on something like Compare the Market to get an idea what's out there.

      • I've tended to leave my insurance as it is when the "automatic renewal" comes through...... the lazy option really but assumed the insurer, Directline, was thoroughly trustworthy! Renewal just came through for our Skoda..... up from £250 to £350 which I queried and they didn't really have an answer other than to suggest the Skodas might have suddenly become more expensive to repair or people were having more accidents in them. Comparethe market found me lots of reputable insurers at a price of £190. Its worth checking the reviews of insurers though as some of the cheapest have terrible reviews and should be avoided. Then my work van came through...... up £50 from last year to £252....... no plausible reason given for the increase. Again, Comparethemarket found me some reputable insurance for £180 fully comp. Directline were unable to "negotiate"  the premium so I've had to leave them.

Like Paul, I'm not in a low-risk postcode but I'm over 60 now, 9 years no claims though I was caught speeding at 35 in a 30 limit last year.

      • Paul I'm actually older than you with an even longer NCD..... but thanks for trying to make me feel better !
