Best value van insurance?

Mines due, I'm with the NFU every year it goes up :-( every year I get an alternative quote to make sure the renewel is competitive...this year I clicked on Van compare at the top of the screen whilst on landscape juice, filled out enough detail to clone several of my good self, got my quote, which was no better and within 5 mins the home phone is ringing off the hook from guess who !

So my insurance goes up and I seem to be paying for either a million sales staff ..or.. the sizable print bill for the amount of gumf that the NFU seem to want to squeeze through my letter box ?

I always thought insurance was worked out on a risk assesment of the client ie age/ postcode etc etc...mine should therefore go down year on year !? but it seems the regular law abiding folk who don't claim just pay for everything else the industry needs !?

And breathe

Happy to stay with the NFU but blimey what a racket

  • I always maintain that insurance is just legalised theft- after all you have to have it but when it comes to paying up they don't have to pay as much as they should.

It is going up at quite a rate; could commercial vehicle cover be going up so the companies can work better deals for car drivers? I have heard, though, from someone local to me, that Tesco do fairly affordable van insurance but don't advertise it, you have to ask. Not dealt with them myself (yet).

And as regards postcode; I live in a village of maybe 100 people in rural Cornwall but my postcode starts with PL (Plymouth), so as far as insurance companies are concerned I am at as much risk at home in the middle of nowhere as I would be if my van was parked in the middle of the roughest most crime ridden parts of Plymouth. You can't tell me that's fair...

I just got my renewal through from "More Than" Business. £652.19 for my VW XLWB Luton, no points no convictions, years of no claims etc etc.

Went on line and have got it for £351.84, with better cover, Insurance is a racket, shop around every renewal date.

  • False claims for whiplash are one of the main reasons for high premiums. Makes me sick. I would never EVER think  of suing someone for a slight neck strain after an accident that saw at least 2 parties stressed, scared and out of pocket already.

  • My renewal came the other day from NFU.........96 hilux import crew cab, 43 years old with clean sheets an no claims, they tried it on again this years..........up from £550 to £740 !!!!!!!!

Straight on the phone, 10 mins later £580...............WHY ????????

Apart from giving me a thrombo again !!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm with NFU for commercial vehicle and Employers/Public Liability also. I find them very good to deal with but I don't think they're the cheapest out there.

Full NCB - £700 a year for my MWB Transit.

Mark not intending to Hi-jack your post but, does any member have all their eggs in one basket as far as insurance is concerned, ie PL EL van pickup 4x4 etc etc.

All my vehicles and PLEL are with different insurance companies. I have tried to put them under the one roof so to speak but I cant get a competitive price, always ends up a lot dearer than getting each vehicle insured seperatley. I have the VW Luton, LDV Hi roof MWB, Fiat Punto Van and a Nissan Pathfinder 4X4 and my PLEL all with different companies, very annoying. Anyone got any experience of getting it all under the one company ??

  • I've got my PL insuance with the NFU too...I even asked if they wanted my house insurance and my two bikes as well but they didn't seem interested ?

  • NFU = No Flippin Use

  • Mine came through today from Commercial Vehicle Direct. Up to £580.

Thanks for the Tesco advice! Used their "compare" website, got the same policy with the same company for £414. CVD agreed to match it, so £166 better off thanks to LJN. Think that deserves a beer.  :-)

  • i insured my transit van in april this year for £312 i found a ldv maxus at a good price and was going to change it would have given me a better tow weight than my transit . they wanted an extra £357 to change the van details or i could buy a new policy from someone else for £367 for 12 month cover . in the end they messed me around so much i lost the deal on the van
