Looks like old steel electrical conduit - are/were there lights or electric gates ?
Are there any "joining couplers" evident ?
Can you extropolate its direction into the property ?
both cables run directly towards the cupboard under the stairs. Where the connection is made to the property.
No no lights or gates. This runs from kerb side directly to the house bang in the centre of the front door. I have only uncovered half of the pipe so far and there are no joiners. In that photo you can see just to the right the black of what I presume is newish armored electricity.
The pipe is beneath that concrete path you can see at the top of the path where its had concrete smeared over the top of it. Sorry for bad picture.
Hi James,
Does the pipe run in line with your kitchen or gas meter? (gas usually takes the shortest route to the meter position)
It's hard to tell from the image but it could be a redundant gas main before the swapped to Polyethylene.
I had one that looked just like that in my old property. However I'd still get the pipe checked out before you touch it.
This is an image of an old steel gas pipe.
Thanks for the responses. Yes the pipe runs directly towards the kitchen and the cupboard under stairs which is probably where the gas metre is. I presume I'm just going to have to ring npower and see if they can come and have a look :(
what happens when you run the cat scanner over it now? Err on the side of caution, if I was you and get the utility company out. Prepare your homeowner for a wait for it to get sorted though
we uncovered an electric one similar to this when we were lowering a garden by 4 feet. the conduit was 4" below the ground. The owner had to pay £3000 and wait 6 months to get it lowered.
i will run the cat over it 2moro. Does the fact that there is a more modern looking electric cable next to it lower suggest its not electric though?
does look like one of the old services (gas or electric, common for both), but unless you can trace from the other end or you can account for all the services you cant be sure. If in doubt get it checked. of course if you want it checked quickly, then go through it with the digger, but it will cost about 300 or 400 if its live to get it repaired! Bear in mind if its gas it wont come up on the cat scanner, but there should be a decent yellow polypropenene gas one going to the property (as the picture above)
Thanks for the advice. I will get it checked asap. Pain in the backside Ive never had one this close to the surface.
