What methodology did you use for calculating planting densities ? If it's an industry accepted method and it was discussed and/or documented, then explain to client situation and agree a change order, price it and see if they accept.
If you totally under-estimated or misunderstood, then be honest with them, discuss and see if there is a compromise that can be reached - perhaps make a discounted offer to resolve (ie charge shrubs at cost, labour at normal - but bundle price up so you protect future shrub pricing).
Thanks Gary, I planned the garden using recommended plant spacings, but was working to a concept and the hard landscaping layout has changed! What percentage costing would you consider to be a large oversight?
New spec should mean new price.
As plants take 5-10 years to mature - day 1 ain't going to be lush
Educate the client before the job - and infill with annuals or temp low cost planting that can be removed (although more initial maintenance)
Agree with Richard and goes back to my first point. 'Lush' is a subjective term and thus means so many things to so many people. By specifyin to accepted industry standards/guidelines, it sets expectations.
Also worth noting that quality/shape/size of shrusb vary termendously even tho they may be 3L or 7L pots. Being able to hand select at nurseries is key.
