Turnover of machinery

Hi All

Just wondered how often you guys where replacing machinery like mowers strimmers and hedges cutters?

I know it depends on how much work they are being put through and how often they are maintained but just wanted a general idea as i have been trading for 10 years now and was getting 4-6 years out of the machines but this year already i have had gear pack up.Maybe its just that ive been lucky in the past but now starting to think that i should be replacing a piece of machinery with a new one ever 2-3 years?

Whats your thoughts?

  • we been running for about same time and i got the same issue , i kept my kaaz mower to long and had to pay out for some major repairs

hedge cutter and strimmers i run in to the ground i am going to replace mowers at 5 years from now on .

  • Only replace when the repair costs more or same as new kit.

The kit being produced today is trash compared to kit that was being made even 10 years ago, personally I will run a piece of machinery for no longer than two years with basic servicing then replace it with new, although this year I've invested in two Stihl kombi engines and both have been problematic and both will be getting sold and replaced after this season, what I move onto for next season is unknown but it won't be a Stihl made kombi machine...

Hi Tom, all fuel and carb related, I brought a km94rce and it's had a complete new fuel system on it and it's about 4 months old, the machine is constantly starved of fuel, and the km56 I brought as a back up machine is also having fuel problems but the opposite, constant flooding, fuel pouring out of the air filter no matter what I try, the have checked the Stihl forums and lots of people are having fuel system related issues with the newer models ...:-/ Many thanks

How do you store them? I use 2 KM 94's and I used to use 90's and the only issue I've ever had is with the throttle cables snapping. IF you store them air filter side down they can leak fuel onto the fitler (not ideal) but very easily solved by not storing them filter side down.

Cheers for the advice mate, both kombi machines are stored right way up on a shelf, the 94 has had issues from new , that's why the fuel system has all been changed on warranty, but the 56 has its issues whilst trying to run and after its finished (if I can get it started that is) if I sit it on a patio etc it leaves a small pool of fuel under the air filter element? Never had any of these issues with the 90 4mix engines I used to use... Cheers mate

  • I only replace anything when it's been stolen! Providing you can do your own maintenance/repairs, most machinery can be economically kept going almost indefinitely. Everything gets a good going over in the winter...... any component looking a bit "tired" gets replaced.  Never had a breakdown yet.

I budget for 3 years so anything longer is a bonus. But as said if you buy decent kit in the first place you should be able to run for years and years as you can still get parts if you go with the big brands.
  • You can't loose with small Stihl chainsaws. Buy MS181s for £220 each, run for a year or two (got 2 year warranty on the latest ones) and then sell for £150 with a new chain ;-). They'll need a new bar and sprocket too, but it'll do for the firewood cutting homeowner.

Keep big Stihl strimmers till they die, then use for spares as residuals are nowhere near as good.

I tend to use FS70s as combi engines, rag the crap out of them and then move them on at two years, on the original (still new) shaft, looking shiney!
