Turfing on top of sub base

Hi all! Just bought a new build property and the back garden is thick clay. Originally wanting artificial grass, I've dug down 3/4 of a foot and ordered type one sub base as the ground was really boggy. Now the wife and I have decided for ordinary turfas it's alot cheaper. But as the ground is horrendous could I lay the sub base I've ordered then place topsoil then lay the turf? should all be well? The sub base is very earthy and plenty of stones. Many thanks Daniel

  • If the sub-base was suitable for artificial turf, it won't be suitable for natural turf

if the ground is really boggy then best to swap your sub base for straight sharp sand and lay your turf on that

consider adding lime before your subbase as it will help break fdown the clay

If it's really boggy you may also want to consider a soak-away.
