Treating/Painting Decking

Hi Guys!Just a quick questions, if you install a new deck for a customer how often do you advise they treat/paint it to prolong the life? After looking around it seems the most common answer is:Don't apply any treatment within the first 4 weeks. Then treat the deck once a year.Does this sound right?

  • Persuade them to use the "synthetic"  boards like "Millboard".    They look great, easy to install and never need any maintenance.

  • 'Staining' of decking should be thought about very seriously - it can make or break a great job, as the stain rarely looks the same as the example on the tin!

We walked away one Friday evening, feeling very pleased with ourselves, leaving the customer as happy as Larry with the new deck we had just completed, which was bounded by a contemporary white hollow wall ready for soil and box hedging.  When we returned on Monday morning, the customer was nearly in tears.  They had decided to 'stain' the lovely natural deck at the weekend, found the first coat was a bit streaky, so gave it another, then where they had tried to get between the planks, it was darker, so it got a third.  It was that horrible dark orange/brown.  Beware!

    • yes even if it looked ok when first painted, when it weathers and wears off it can look awful...i prefer the natural look too

  • anything water based is a waste of time and will start peeling within months. Oils can look ok but will need re applying at least once a year (if not more often)

It's certainly not a service that's worth offering imo

  • Hi everyone,
Thanks for your replies! We are not looking to offer this as a service however was looking for information to give customers about how to care for the new deck they have. We will basically suggest having it treated once a year, we know a painter/decorator paints decking and fence so after the job is completed we will pass on his details and they will get better advice from him.

    Thanks again!
