Travertine slabs

Im planning to lay a Travertine patio, having never used travertine before I was wondering if it woukd be better to use white cement to help prevent staining, the slabs will be butted up to eachother so no pointing required, any advice regarding travertine would be great.

  • White cement and/or seal the bottom of the slabs. Do butt your slabs tight leave a joint of at least 5mm.

I would also seal the paving surface once everything is fully cured.

    • Thanks for the info Mark, big help.

      Cheers Terry

  • Firstly you need 30mm thick minimum on this material. Any thinner and your asking for trouble. Seal each slab top and sides lightly prior to install. Lay to a 30mm mortar bed minimum don't use standard OPC as you'll get effloresece. Prior to laying each slab apply a bond beige then lay to mortar with a min 5mm gap any less and you'll have no expansion in there. Joint with a brush in or 1 or 2 part resin. Final coats of seal once this is done.
