Towing licenses

basically i need to know what i can do and can't do..

unfortunately i passed my test to late on so i am not allowed to tow on my basic license nor can i drive a 7.5 ton vehicle..

However i have heard from people that i can tow as long as the combined weight doesn't exceed 3.5 ton? Is this right?

I have also heard a different version that i can tow a trailer with a weight limit of up to 750 kg..

What if any are true?

Because in all honesty its extremely baffling!

Thank you in advance LJN

Matt, have a look at this thread : http://www.landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/are-you-towing-a-...

Plenty of comments, views and links to references.

It is a minefield, but you can tow a sub 750kg unbraked trailer if you took you license after that date (We checked because one of my guys tows our TS Industries Chipper/Shredder and it is 'specifically' rated sub 750kg for this reason).

A full car licence already lets you tow trailers weighing no more than 750 kg. You can also tow heavier trailers with a car as long as the total weight of vehicle and trailer isn’t more than 3,500 kg. The fully loaded trailer must also not be heavier than the unladen vehicle (this only applies to licences issued before 19 January 2013).

Straight off the gov's web site. Beyond this you need to add to your licence.

    In addition.......

Check if you have category B or B+E on your licence.

    Category B
You can tow trailers up to 750kg MAM (maximum authorised mass).

You can also tow larger trailers if:
    - the combined trailer and vehicle weight isn’t more than 3,500kg
    - the fully-loaded trailer weight isn’t more than the unladen vehicle weight

    Category B+E
You can tow trailers of any weight.

If not you need to apply for these to your licence, a test will be required.
