I use wickes..... lovely soil that works out at £3 a bag................... trouble is, you're going to need an awful lot of them if its a reasonable size lawn.
Thanks Geoff,
It's a london garden so the lawn is only about 50m2, the soil there isn't too bad so it's just a top dressing really. I'll have a look at Wickes.
Take a look at Binder Loams Melissa, on outskirts of London.

Ive used this company a few times. Lovely dark topsoil. Delivered when stated and in manageable bags.
you could also mix your own by rotavating in some good musroom compost, a little bit of silica sand all into a heavy london type soil go give a good bed then level prior to turfing.
Getting the rotavator through the house would be interesting - although we have done it on occasions!
When comparing make sure they are the same weight or liters.
I've seen recycled / reclaimed soil supplied in bags before from DIY stores. Most use the same suppliers in branded bags and quality does vary by batch / location.
Look for certified soil and/or open bags you can examine.
I'd also go to a local, independant supplier every time.
Any DIY superstore is going to be at least 50% profit. Work the cost back to see how much cost is in the materials. Soil is the lifeblood of a garden, so why pay more for an inferirior product?
My supplier doesn't do topsoil in bags as there's no profit in it (thanks to the warehouse prices). The quality is just leagues ahead of supermarket bagged rubbish, though.
They will do a generous tonne for £38.50. That's got to be worth bagging it up yourself in some cheap rubble sacks? Ten bags and you've covered the cost, the other 40 bags are profit, or just use it at home.
